i need anti virus for college. i have microsoft security essentials but it thinks my version of windows isnt genuine. so witch program from the list posted below is the best free and the best paid option in your opinion?

Avira its free. What windows are you using xp or 7?

another vote for MWB and nod32. But if you use MSE and scan once a month with MWB and super anti spyware you'll be good to go. That's what I use on all my computers and never have any issues. But you also have to use common sense on the internets.

ok i have malwarebytes, but i have never heard of eset. Can you go into a little more depth with it.

I have been using avira for the last 4 years. It is very lightweight, scans fast, and maintains a very small footprint. The free version works great (you just get an pop up once every 24 hrs but you can disable that)

Avira also rates in the top 3-4 AV's on avcomparative.org in tests they run on numerous AV programs.

You can't use malware bytes as a lone standing av. It doesn't look for things a av look for. It need to run along side a av
