is Physx worth it? Need help choosing board. :) - Page 2

Thread Starter
I guess physx isn't worth a ton to me the more I think about it. I'm really digging the HIS iceQ series cards, and the 6850 fits my budget. I just wasn't sure if games wouldn't RUN unless they had physx with the new Unreal3 Engine coming out.

What if I got the AMD card, and then bought an uber-cheap Nvidia card to run as a physx secondary card later on (if I decided I wanted Physx)? Like, and 8600GT or something of the likes. Could that work?

Like I said earlier, thanks so much for your help everyone. I know I'm probably asking basic questions, thanks for helping me out anyways! wink.gif

Well, PhysX isn't common enough to be the deciding factor in GPU selection in my opinion. My previous answer was based on you requiring PhysX.

You can have any GPU and play games with PhysX turned off just fine. You'll only run into problems if you try to turn on GPU PhysX without having an NVIDIA GPU.

That being said, I would still choose a 560 Ti over a 6850 + an NVIDIA card for PhysX. I strongly suspect you'll see much better results with the 560 Ti (quite superior to a 6850) handling the PhysX by itself over the 6850 setup.

Physx isn't worth it at all. And to answer you're question about Unreal Engine 3, it seems you've been misinformed. Unreal Engine 3 is in no way dependent on Phsyx to run. Even if it is supported by the game, Physx will be an option that can be disabled. You should have no fears whatsoever about going with an AMD/ATI card with that regard.

Wont the new Batman ARKHAM CITY support physx like like first one? It was a big difference on high setting vs no physx but lots of people can look past it.

A typical GTX560 Ti will perform about 18-19% faster than a typical HD6850.
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/N...560_Ti/27.html

As OP has eyes on a specific HD6850, let us consider the cost factor.
Newegg has HIS IceQ HD6850 at US$170 (after MIR).
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...pk=iceq%206850

The cheapest GTX560 Ti at Newegg is Galaxy's.
It costs US$190 (after MIR)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814162074

IMHO, $20 more to buy roughly 20% more performance is a good idea.

Therefore, unless OP plans to CF or simply needs to save that $20, I would suggest getting that Galaxy GTX560 Ti, mainly due to its high C/P (Physx is only a very very small factor).

Very small difference if you ask me. Same goes for mirror's edge.

I agree 100%. Mafia 2 and Batman AA with physx on vs off is like settings on ultra vs high in any other game. A lot of people on this forum will say physx isnt worth it, but they will run out and get a new card when they can't max out a new game even though their current card will max out everything else. Even though physx isn't worth it too me I can't say its not worth it to everyone else. If you spend 90% of the time playing one game and it looks great with physx on high, Why not get a physx card?

If Battlefield 3 was a physx game you would see a lot of posts asking "What card should I get for physx?"
