ATI 6850 randomly underclocks (Help)

My 6850 every now and then will randomly underclock itself while I am playing games. I can play the games fine for hours, and every now and then it will drop from my 900mhz overclock to 300mhz. So I have no clue what to do, as I am new to the whole computer scene. The only way to fix it is to reboot my system because it holds strong and refuses to go back to even a stock clock. I use MSI. Any ideas?

ok so it seems like it's underclocking back to the 2d clocks. See what happens if you take your overclock off. If it keeps happening you might have a faulty card or you might have to find a way through the bios to see if you can keep it running at 3d clocks constantly.

EDIT: also, what drivers do you have, youd be amazed at what updating your drivers can fix. does the underclocking happen in every game? and how have you overlcocked it? through the settings in catalyst? through msi afterburner?

Enable AMD overdrive, and see what happens, also the underclocking is probably a result of the card detecting a lower work load, and underclocking to save power

Do not install the AMD's CCC, only use the others' softwares like GIGABYTE's Easyboots or Afterburner. the other possibility is that your power doesn't support enough Watts to your computer.

Ok, I use MSI afterburner to overclock. It will happen mainly in bioshock, though it has happened in BBC2 before. It makes sense that it would be trying to save power and underclock itself because Bioshock is easy for it to run. I have tried every driver ATI has to offer trying to fix a line across the screen problem in bioshock at Dx10; so much to the point where I just installed the latest driver and forced bioshock to play in Dx9. This underclock only happens 2-5 times a month, so it isn't that big of a deal, it is just I have to shut my PC down to get it to go back to normal clocks because it is like it is stuck at 300mhz until I do so. Thanks
