Just wait. I have a 5770 that performs respectably compared to more powerful brethren.

Remember you can flash the bios of a 6950 to run as a 6970 although this may be a bit too heavy on your PSU depending what other hardware you have

While I agree that it did supersede the 5770, the 6870 far out-performs it, being more comparable with the 5850 in my opinion.

6870 is between 5850 and 5870 in terms of performance. 5870 is about 5-10% faster than 6870 depending on game, it's not significantly faster.

With the new drivers HD 6870 is equivalent to a HD 5870....

I believe at the 6870's release yes. Now with driver updates the 6870 is comparable to a 5870. But closer to a 5850. The 5870 was pretty much identical to the non unlocked 6950 at release, now with driver maturity, it seems 6950 has pulled slightly ahead.

the 6870 now performs, depending on the game, within a +/- 12% margin of the 5870. but yea.

I would imagine now the 6870 consistently keeps pace, or slightly out performs the 5870.

Not worth the upgrade to a 6950 either. Maxed out you're talking a few frames. Best to wait for the next release of cards, or go crossfire 6870s.
