gtx 260 (core 216) vs gtx 460 1gb

Thread Starter
My friend was wondering whether to buy a

gtx 260 (core 216) for $55

or

gtx 460 1gb version EE Superclocked edition for $130

they are both used cards and my friend is just trying to get a card
that will last him until the amd 7xxx series come out

which is a better deal and which card will have a better resell price when 7xxx comes out?
I've heard some bad things about the EE cards, even though they look awesome. Some seem to have heat/noise issues.

Newegg has a Zotac for $127 after mir, $130 used seems pretty excessive.

Performance wise, benchmarks show a reference 460 should outperform a reference GTX 260 core 216.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/170?vs=180&i=87.88.90.91.93.102.94.99.100.103.116.115.118.119.128.125.121.126.123.122.124.127

Logically the 460 would have a better resell price since it's newer/better and supports DX 11.

Use that to judge if it's worth the money.

The GTX 560 *NON Ti version* is about to replace the GTX 460 at the $200 price point, it's worth looking at, and, using that same logic, the 460 series should become cheaper.

Here's the same comparison only with the lesser GTX 460 model at work. biggrin.gif

GTX 260 c216 vs 768MB GTX 460

The lesser model 460 clearly curbstomps the 260 into nothing. We're talking about Fermi vs G92b here.

Just go for the GTX 460 EE. It's a very powerful card and has no worse problems with heat than the GTX 260 does. DOOOO EEEEET!

$55 for a GTX 260 216? That's a really good deal.

The GTX 460 is NOT twice as good as the GTX 260 (its more than twice the price your friends buying at). Actually not even close to twice as good.... more like 10-15% better.

GTX 260 216: 800 GFlops

GTX 460: 900 GFlops

Source here.

I say buy the GTX 260. In fact he should get two GTX 260's (at that price) and SLI them..... would still be cheaper than a GTX 460 but much more powerful.

Vantage (19k GTX460 vs. 16k with my GTX260 Lightning OC'd to 870MHz) it's not worth the extra 80$ for me.

Benchmarks are nice but I've owned both an overclocked gtx260 and gtx465 (same performance as gtx460 1gb) and fermi is well worth the price difference. Faster and smoother at higher resolutions with more AA and AF. Not to mention the 460 can be overclocked just as well, much higher and run cooler too. I would even take one over SLI 260s, another setup I've owned.

I owned GTX 260's in SLI as well as a GTX 460 1Gb (eventually in SLI).....

GTX 260's in SLI beat the crap out of 1 GTX 460. If this guy can get two 260's for less than the price of one 460 then to me its a no brainer. The buyer just needs to make sure his mobo supports SLI and he has a strong enough psu (650w or more should be plenty).

And by beat the crap out of you mean 4-5 fps in games that actually use SLI efficiently? Ever try running a high amount of AA at 1080p on 260s? What about general smoothness of games and higher mins? Because the 460 clearly wins in these areas, even against SLI 260s. Crysis and GTA4 are two games that come to mind where the 460 wins hands down, not because of max fps in a benchmark but actual gameplay.
