Need a new card that runs cool

Thread Starter
Hey all. I've been out of the loop PC component wise since I built my computer after I graduated high school in 2008. Time has been surprisingly kind to my build, no failed hard drives (5 of them), and its been able to keep up with every game I've thrown at it although the gaming has died down considerably.

I'm here asking for some help because my HD4870 is showing its age in a very annoying way. According to Catalyst Control Center my card idles at 97 degrees celsius and the ambient temperature in my room seems to agree with it. I've tried dusting it before and gotten stuff out but I can't seem to get the shell off for whatever reason. I don't think there is a whole lot of dust left in there though.

Thus I'm looking to make the first upgrade to my machine and get a new graphics card. I want it to be just as powerful as the 4870, maybe a little more so seeing as its 3 years old at this point but I also want it to run on the cooler side. Any and all suggestions are welcome (ATI or nVidia) or a solution to my problem that maybe I haven't thought of. Thanks!

probably best to upgrade. If you don't want to spend too much money you could grab an amd/ati 6870 which go for around $200 and you would see a significant improvement over your 4870 and have more features as well such as directx11, tessellation etc...

If you dont want to upgrade, what are your fan settings when it goes up to 97 degrees? You probably already have it but you can download msi after burner http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm and create a custom fan curve so that when your card gets to a certain temperature, the fan will kick in at higher rpm.

edit: btw you DON'T need an msi card to run afterburner

if you can, try going for a MSi Twin Frozr edition of a GPU. Those things run really cool, and are reliable
