WRT160N Ethernet and Wireless issues

Thread Starter
I am having some serious trouble with my WRT160N (v3) router. It's less than a year old. I am using it as a wireless access point; no dhcp and spi firewall off. The modem my ISP (TWC) gives me is also a router (Zyxel), and I have a cable running from port 1 on the modem/router to port 1 on the wrt160n.

The problem (all speeds from speedtest.net): My wireless (with the laptop sitting next to it) often gets 1-3 Mbps. When I plug the ethernet into the wrt160n, it gets the same speeds.

When using the same laptop and ethernet cord, I plug into the modem/router, i get ~20Mbps consistently.

Attempted solutions: I reset the WRT160N (30 seconds of holding the reset), reconfigured everything, and updated the firmware to 3.0.0.3. I'm getting ~10 Mbps now, but that's still half of what I get straight into the modem (all ethernet). Wireless goes between ~3-10Mbps, but I'm going to assume interference on that. I want to be seeing almost equal speeds with ethernet into the modem, and the WRT160N.

Any suggestions on settings or any possible fixes? Helpful answers always get rep+!

try installing DD WRT and see if that works. Use the instructions for V3. It should help improve performance, and allow a whole ton more of settings that only a technical person would understand

I know that's an option, but really out of the box the router shouldn't be cutting my speed by half. I would like to try to get it working with stock linksys firmware if possible. I don't really need all the features of DDWRT, or want to void what little warranty I have left on this router if possible.

Try updating the drivers for your nic if they are not up to date as of now(manufacturer's website if possible). And set the nic for 10/100 if its set to auto. For wireless try just N or G depending on which standard your using(not mixed mode).

The nic as in the the computer's network adapter?

I don't believe that nic is the problem, as it gets the correct speed to the modem. The same computer then gets half that when plugged into the WRT160N, as do other computers on the network. The speed issue is dependent on whether I am connecting to the WRT or the modem, not what computer/nic I am using.

Hes tried resetting the modem. is your Zxyel router setup with DHCP off and see if turning off QoS will work. Are there any other devices plugged into the WRT160N? If they are connected with a speed lower than 100 IE 10Mbps, that might be the reason why.

I don't mean resetting, should have been clearer I mean powering down and back up,which isn't the same as resetting(hence rebooting).

2-3 megabytes per second = 18-24Mbps

Op what connection do you have? Is it a 54Mbps (802.11g) router?

Download netmeter
http://readerror.gmxhome.de/
try transferring a file while running NetMeter, or another transfer speed monitoring program. See what speeds you're currently getting, so you know what you're working with. Make sure the file you are testing withis large enough for an accurate speed result.

The Zyxel handles the DHCP, there is no QoS option on the Zyxel. DHCP, QoS, and Firewall is off on the WRT.
The WRT only has the Zyxel and my laptop plugged into it.

Yep. I reset them both. Multiple times.

I'm confused by your question. As I said above, my internet connection is ~20 Mbps (speedtest directly from the modem). The Zyxel modem/router and WRT should both be capable of at least 100 Mbps LAN connections (since I'm using ethernet) so I should have no problems getting a correct speedtest on both. All my speeds are in Megabits (Mb), not Megabytes (MB).

Will try this, but I'm pretty sure it's going to show the same results as speedtest.
