You dont need no flippin 3x360's. my h50 runs under 65c load with no fans.


edit: make a seprate loop for the gfx and cpu.

i was thinking of using quick disconnects in case i wanted to move the rig or the rad. does anyone have any experience with them? are they prone to leaks?

I believe another user tested using a 360 rad with no fans, and it worked for a bit, but since the heat was not being moved properly the temps continued to rise until it was unsafe to keep going. I have my doubts that a 140mm rad could do it. If it actually can I wonder what makes it any different.

the heat generated by the two gpus and cpu folding at 100% 24/7 is going to be enough to justify a 360 with good fans in push pull. so to be passive, or to run fewer fans, im going to need more rad area.

I made a custom loop a long time ago and messed around with passive. I used a huge transmission radiator from an old bus from a junkyard for $5. It was like 2x3 feet or something and worked perfectly well, but was only on an old athlon 750mhz single core thunderbird. Though the heat output was probably not much different than today's chips given the voltage/wattage it used. Makes me want to go junkyard hopping this weekend and pick up a few more and play around with one of my newer systems

I'd just do the same. Go with 2 or 3 smaller trans-radiators or one extra large one from a bigger type vehicle like a bus. If you just get them from the scrap yard like I did, you can afford to try a bunch of different ones/combos to test. They are cheap from there. I wouldn't pay those crazy prices for the ones online, even if I was building a top end loop. \\

I actually just got some Quick disconnects and I can say this, They are extremely solid, much bigger than I thought they would be and you do not need hose clamps. I use 3/8" tubing and these things grab on like there is no tomorrow, it was easier to slip 7/16" tubing on 1/2" barbs. Flow rate won't be impacted that much and I recommend the VL3N series, there really is no spill. Maybe a little water inside the fitting and a tiny air bubble get's introduced but not enough to hurt your loop.

thats a good idea. i've thought about using old rads from cars before, but was afraid of mixing metals/ corrosion/ getting the rads clean/ all the other stuff you read about on the interweb, so that kind of scared me away. i've got an old fourwheeler radiator that is about 12"x18" that might work now that i think about it...

I would say:

1 loop for CPU
1 loop for GPUs

I would use at least 1-2 gentle typhoons at lower RPM just to try and move some air through the rad else the air circulation in the room won't be enough.

awesome guys, thanks. what are your thoughts about heat exchangers? while looking at the 1080 rads, i continued browsing and eventually go to the heat exchangers. ive had an idea in the back of my mind to run a loop through a refrigerator (i know, condensation) however, if the loop were run like this:

[refrigerator]>>[heat exchanger]<<[water loop]

would that be a feasible setup? i have a mini fridge in my office that might work... and if it does cool it too much from condensation, i could just turn up the setting on the fridge

no fans, no, extra sound, just the quiet hum of a refrigerator compressor...and cold drinks at my desk

A fridge is not designed to move that much heat so it will not work.

The amount of heat your rig will produce is quite substantial tbh, and you will need decent watercooling with fans to keep everything operating at safe temp levels.

ie.
1x 1090t clocked to 4.22Ghz @ 1.5v will put out approx 211w of heat at max load
2x 5870 at stock speed will put out approx 188w of heat each at max load

That's a total of 587w of heat being produced.

So if you are going to be using this rig 24/7 for folding and those 2x GPU and 1x CPU are producing almost 600w of heat, then tbh you're s**t out of luck if you want to go passive, unless you live in Alaska

If you want it to be silent, then move your folding rig to a location where you can not hear it
