My Computer Is Showing Age

Thread Starter
Alike my parents, my computer has become quite slow. It's quite frustrating to be honest. Even loading web pages has become a hassle. I can't boot up games like GMod, TF2, etc. It chugs through everything it does. I have to hit the case and smack the computer around to get it going sometimes and get the fans/lights to work(no joke). I'm considering selling my computer for a few hundred. I've had threads oddly similar to this, so I have a good idea of what I'm looking to get. But I kept holding it off to wait for for Bulldozer/Ivy Bridge news, etc. But from my understanding, Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge share the same socket, eh?

So I'm thinking.. why not act on this 'Future' rig now, in my sig? Would there be any benefit of waiting? There are a few things I would like to change, however! I saw Corsair is releasing their new hydro cooler soon, and would much rather grab that. Not to mention, snagging a Z68 motherboard instead. Thoughts on the best, logical solution? I mean, my computer is as good as a torn condom right now. I'm just trying to justify which parts would be more logical. I don't get paid until Friday.

In all honesty, there will always be something better that's going to come out. I would just buy it.

Heh, give it a few minutes. The 2600k will be old technology soon enough. It's like that commercial where as they are taking a toy out of the box the new version is being advertised on tv.

If the idea is to jump to Ivy Bridge when it releases, I'd recommend to get a Core i5 2500K instead of a Core i7 2600K. A Z68 motherboard should be, last I heard, ideal and support Ivy Bridge.

What are coming from, by the way?

But if I understand correctly, I should be able to upgrade to Ivy Bridge by only swapping the CPUs, correct?

If the information I last heard still holds true, yes. I recommend the Core i5 2500K instead if that is the plan. It's is essentially the same thing only it lacks 2MB L3 cache and Hyper-threading, but if you're only going to have the CPU under a year, I say it's not worth the ~$100 premium. This is, of course, assuming you are worried about the best value.
