I wanted to try this game a few years ago but I didn't have the computer for it.
No, it doesn't ruin a game. Free people get the basic content, those who pay get more. It's quite simple. Just like MANY MANY MANY other services in the world. There's a free service, then the premium version of that service. Obviously the premium will more than likely be better.
The only drawback is the people who already bought the game, they're out whatever they paid for it originally.
Those who subscribe will feel no difference. Also the item market as of right now in Conan is things that yield no real advantage other than XP potions. Big deal, so you progress a bit quicker.
F2P is what Age of Conan really needs. It's a great change of pace MMO in the low-fantasy genre, rather than pretty colors with elves and faeries. Unfortunately a low player population is plagueing the game. Hopefully this F2P will bring in more players which will bring in more money so more content and more updates and more more more more more more.
