There's also a front panel For those who have USB 3 headers on their motherboard but lack USB 3 ports on their case.
Thats not even the same thing. It can be used for the same purpose in some situations, but it does not easily allow people to use older cases with 3.0 usb headers in a compact and neat way. I personally have no interest in the BitFenix version at all while the Lian Li version I would consider buying. So yes, it is another option, is it a better option? No, just a different option.

What is needed then is a USB 2.0 header-to-USB 3.0 header converter.
There would be no use for that. While USB 3.0 is backward compatible, it won't make your USB 2.0 device magically work faster.

Since the actual motherboard header for 3.0 is vastly different from 2.0, there's a need for this. Especially since there are cases (Lian Li, Corsair) out there that have USB 3.0 I/O panels but not the actual motherboard header on the cable itself.

I have one of these:

USB3.0 header thing that also doubles as a 2.5" bay. Can also be taken apart and has a PCI bracket, which is what I use. Plugs into the mobo

"So old" yet USB 3.0 Header specs haven't been around for what? 3 months? Not to mention most people have found this thread informative and useful. So, you can get out and troll elsewhere nubbalicious.

Nowhere did I say that would happen. I simply want to be able to use a USB 3.0 header with older cases like mine. A convertor as I mentioned would allow use of the stock I/O panel that comes with a header for USB 2.0 (such as is the case with the Antec 1200) to be used with a USB 3.0 header.

Do USB extension cables work for any of the USB formats (that is effectively what USB I/O panel cables are)? I don't think so; if they work I would think they would limit the speed to whatever version the cable has enough leads for.

That doesn't make sense. Are you saying there are devices like this for USB 2.0 headers, and so this device is needed since those will not work on 3.0 headers?

I don't want to put words into anyone's mouth but I believe he was saying it won't work because the actual number of pins on a 2.0 connector vs. 3.0 connector differ. Even with a converter of some sort the 2.0 port would never operate at 3.0 specifications. What I got from it at least.

Not only that but the physical pinout is completely different, so you can't just plug a 2.0 lead in the middle or at the edge of the 3.0 header, too many things will cross and you could fry the USB controller.

But that has no bearing on what I said, hence my confusion.
