Tri-sli 470 to dual SLI 3gb 580 - Page 2

Your 480 setup had 1440 cuda cores operating at 900 Mhz, your 580s have 1024 cuda cores working at 990Mhz. x8 vs x16 is like a 3% performance hit at most, and its not cumulative.

Whatever you're attempting to sell, I'm not buying it.

Edit: Your 1008Mhz run got you T1 33.66fps T2 34.13fps T3 49.56fps T4 23.31fps

MrTooShorts 940Mhz GTX480 run got him T1 30.28fps T2 31.63fps T3 45.52fps T4 21.14fps

Lord knows you don't always get perfect scaling, however what you're offering doesn't add up.

Yes, under water, EK "wave" blocks vs new 5x0 EK blocks along with less heat making for ~5C less temps with 580s.

Whatever you're attempting to sell, I'm not buying it.
1) I don't sell anything and you don't have to buy anything.
What would I gain from advising fellow user to buy product X?

I just present actual results on my setup - period.
Everybody takes into account various opinions/facts and make decision based on that.
Sorry if you don't like it - I had hoped it could help.

2) Do you realise that your cumulative cores @ speed count is wrong?
There is more to it like SLI scaling - which for 3-sli is far from ideal.
There are also a bit more differences than just more cores on 580s.

3) One thing which I didn't mention and which makes a further little bit difference is memory.
This higher density elpida chips on my cards go all the way up to 2260MHz in SLI.
On 480's in 3-SLI 1970-2000 was limit, more than that = artifacts in Vantage.

Do you have your 3d 11 score from SLI and tri? I'd like to see them if at all possible.

Here are URLs to my 3D Mark runs:

3DMark 11 - 3x480s = 15105

3DMark 11 - 2x580s = 13682

580s got exactly 1423 less points = 9%

Later I got 580s run at ~1000MHz which got me closer to 5% but at this time I didn't have wi-fi installed on the new board so no link.
Yeah I know you're not buying but even if you ignore it, the 9% in best case scenario isn't what you expect, is it?
And that's the best case scenario for 480s - single screen benchmark which uses very little VRAM, in surround/3d surround gains with 580s are fantastic.

580 sli 64 67 94 45

480 tri sli 75 81 111 53

Those are odd results really.

Because despite the 480s being faster, they were slower in the combined. Even though your cpu was also clocked higher with the 480s.

Its also a 17k gpu score vs 14.5k

Whatever it doesn't matter.

Exactly, OP question is for higher resolution and games - where the gains are - so no point discussing synthetic benchmark on single screen...

You brought it up, don't get mad at me when I point out you're wrong.

Nor did he mention 3D, which was when you chimed in about higher vram usage.

If you really want to "prove me wrong" bench your high res against a ATI user with 3 6970 gpus in whatever configuration with a nearly identical rig outside that.

There is no question 470s don't have the vram to handle that res, nor do stock 480/580s, however I believe outside 3D most titles will run fine with 2GB.

Your 480s were also more than 5% faster, you don't compare score totals to figure out gpu performance differences.

So outside of 3D assuming the OP doesn't have 3D screens or doesn't use it since he never mentioned it, what are the advantages of $1200+ 2x 580s over $900 3x 6970s, or $1200 4x 6970s? Or $1400 2x 6990s?

What's the matter with you?
I appreciate your comments but your urge to discuss, on top of "don't get mad" & "you are wrong" is ridiculous. You're missing the point.

The OP asked about upgrade from 470s to 580 3GB which is not far from what I've done so I've tried to share my results.
What I said was:

F1 2010 benchmark VRAM usage in 3D is >2600MB...
1) Main point of my post was huge gain in 3D Surround.
Same go for the Surround since 3D use just ~ 150-300MB more than 2D.
My fault I didn't add that. Hope that clears it now.

2) Only reason I mentioned benchmarks was to show the only downside - which doesn't matter because it's 1 screen with very little VRAM usage - which you've agreed on later - yet you couldn't helps yourself but discuss it to the smallest detail.

Furthermore, I never mentioned anything about ATI - at all. Period.
Now you're trying discuss with me ATI vs Nvidia upgrade?

I just said what I've observed on my system - end of story.
Feel free make any advise you wish, whether it's Nvidia or ATI, later OP will make his decision based on various information in here.
I'm not going discuss that nor anything else.

Thank you, leaving now
