GPU Upgrade Question

Thread Starter
Hi All,

Im having a bit of trouble upgrading my GPU; im coming from a GTX 260 and have just put in a GTX 560 ti, the only problem is Windows refuses to boot. I can get it to post, but usually a screen coming up that says AHCI not installed, and the other times when i try to change settings at the bios, it gets stuck at the logo screen for the mobo and freezes.

When i change the settings in the bios i make sure that it boots pcie first, but when i save those settings and restart, thats when it freezes at logo screen. The only way i get it to post and the AHCI message comes up is when i clear the cmos.

I cant go back and try uninstalling the drivers with my gtx 260 because i already got rid of it.

Any ideas?

So im still stuck, anyone have any ideas? I even changed a setting in the bios allowing for a hardware reset but that didn't do anything.

Are you using PCI-e plugs or 4 pin molnex to PCI-e adapters?

Your error about ACHI mode is probably notifying you that the bios could automatically switch to ACHI mode due to it thinking ACHI has better performance.? It is totally irrelevant to your issue with the GPU though.

Check your power connections. Make sure to push them in tight and report back. You should have no issues unless your PSU is going bad.

You may want to clear CMOS too and see if that works.

im using pcie plugins, and ive checked the connections, theyre good. im hoping the psu isn't going bad its only 1 year old, and my computer worked fine literally 2 days ago before switching the gpu.

Every time i clear the cmos it posts, but it never gets to the windows screen but rather a black screen saying "AHCI not installed...defaults loaded", but it just sits at that screen and doesn't change.

One thing i did notice was that in the bios, my second hard drive without the OS is set to first boot priority but everytime i change i and save and exit, when i reboot it gets stuck at the mobo logo screen, although it gives me a post beep....

Ok well ive made some progress...I got my system to boot up normally and load windows, now everything works fine, but this is only because i took ONE OUT OF THE TWO STICKS OF RAM OUT, and left the furthest one from the cpu in.
I honestly have no idea what this means and why it works with just one stick, any help would be nice.

Probably means that that ram went bad on you. Look it over see if you can see any physical damage, if not, try putting it in a different slot on the motherboard/running with only the stick currently removed installed.
