HDD gone bad?

Thread Starter
I'm suspicious that one of my drives failed.
It's an old Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 300Gb drive

here's the thing. This week my pc had really long booting period, then sometimes windows didn't show the drive and now I'm not sure if it's dead and gone. All I now it's spinning but that's all.
I'm so stupid that I dindn't check it before with HD tune

download seatools and run it on that drive. It will tell you whether it has errors etc
post #3 of 10
so a few questions first:
1) does it shown in your BIOS?
2) have you tried swapping out the data and the power chords?
3) have you tried using a different port on your motherboard for the HDD?

if you have tried all of this and nothing has worked, then just reformat the drive through windows after taking a disk image of it (so you don't lose your data)

if windows doesn't recognize the drive, then i wouldn't guess you can get your information off of it... if that is the case, then i would try reformatting the drive with a fresh install of windows, and then reformat it again to a back up disk (installing windows is just to make sure it is recognized)

yes I've done all three of the steps
ohhh the UEFI is confusing me if I understand correctly it's shown in BIOS, I see these numbers ST3300620AS I believe it must be the drive cuz I got nothing else attached to SATA as those 2 drives

Thats the thing I don's see it in Windows...I searched for it in Disk Management service.
Reformating is not an option, there is highly valued data I need...
What could be a broblem with it? Im going despirate here

EDIT: I'm downloading linux hopefuly it'll show the hdd

Check the SMART status using Crystal Disk Info.

Edit: Sigh I should have read closer. I know that WD makes a tool to check a drive before it loads into Windows. I think Seagate does too.

Seagates tool is called Seatools, Which i pointed out at the first post to the thread. Use Seatools and check to see if the drive is bad. That tool will confirm if the drive is bad or not.

OK.
Just downloaded Seatools and beggining to test

Update 1: The DOS version of seatools Failed to find HDD, hope, that windows version shows it.
Update 2: YES! Windows versions shows the drive, beggining to test....
Update 3: So I ran some tests (SMART, short drive self test, short generic) and all of them PASSED

In that case what's wrong with it?

Use Crystal Disk Info. It has the most indepth SMART test I've ever seen. It showed errors on my failing drive that nothing else did, including the WD SMART tools.

Checked and nothing...shows that drive is OK.
That HDD is driving me nuts
The last thing I'll try is Linux maybe something magical will happen.

Update : The Linux thing worked. Backed up data to my NAS server
Later will reformat the drive and hope that it'll be usabe in windows again

Thanks for your input
