two overclocks E6600 & E6320

Thread Starter
Hello all!

I've been reading voraciously about overclocking C2D's in the past few weeks and my understanding has come a long way. I'd like to bounce some general ideas off you all before getting into specific troubleshooting in other posts.

I'm trying to build TWO overclocked machines (both for gaming, primary for HTPC and "enthusiast usage" also), using a combination of parts from my previous computer (no OC) and another machine that a friend bought from his brother.

I have two CD2's, (E6600 2.4Ghz and E6320 1.86Ghz)

Two decent overclocking mobos (GA-P965-S3 and ASUS P5K)

and two RAM kits (2x1GB OCZ PC2-6400 gold and 2x1GB Reaper PC2-8500 both rated 5-5-5-15).

My primary machine runs in a Silverstone LC20M which is a great case in my opinion, although I'm sure there are better out there for cooling. Regardless, with good airflow through the case (2x92mm in + 2x80mm out) and a Noctua NH-C12P SE14 CPU cooler I'm pleased with this setup. I've also got a Sapphire HD6850 and a OCZ Vertex 2 120gb for this machine.

I should also mention that the second machine will be running a Sapphire HD 2900XT video card. Not so snazzy but should be fine for HL2 engine games.

So my question is this: Assuming I buy more RAM for my primary machine and a cooler for the second machine... do the following overclock targets make sense considering what I have to work with?

primary: 360-400FSB w/ 2x multi on PC2-6400 approx 3.2-3.6ghz

secondary: 390-430FSB w/ 2x multi on PC2-8500 approx 2.8-3.0ghz

My thinking is that on the faster machine I'm unlikely to be able to achieve a stable overclock with FSB much past 400 while on the slower machine I'll almost certainly need the extra FSB to make it worth it. Also, the ASUS board is rated for higher bus speeds than the gigabyte although I have read of people running the S3 stable at 450mhz.

So basically... which type of RAM should should I buy for the primary machine? 800mhz or 1066mhz ? Also, am I likely to run into problems if I run 2x1gb+2x2gb for 6gb total assuming I match memory speed, timings and voltages ? Performance-wise, how much of a performance jump should I expect if I shelled out for 4 sticks of (800 or 1066) low latency RAM for the primary machine?

Your input is greatly appreciated! I'm sure I'll have more specific questions as I get further into these builds. I will most likely be buying used RAM - between eBay, kijiji, and this forum I doubt I'll have a problem finding a good deal!

Thanks in advance!

~gg~

I don't have experience with those processors however in my experience there is no problem on most intel chips when running mixed memory sizes or even speeds, for example on my 1366 board I ran 3x2gb 1600-CL7 and 3x4GB 1600-CL9 and they worked happily at the slowest of the two's speed (1600-CL9) although of course you may have to increase the voltage on the memory controller. The motherboard manual says you can't but really I wouldn't believe it.
