computer freezing - Page 4

Oh I hate that I'm asking this, but is there a chance of buying some new memory just for the sole purpose of testing to see if whether it's the slots or the memory?

I don't see why not. Some cheap memory isn't much money in the grand scheme of things. Any recommendations on some cheap ram?

That's out of my league, but I am confident someone else can recommend some.

Although, I think another option is to check this motherboard's memory compatibility list (if there is one) and then get the lowest-priced stuff on the list. At least that might guarantee certainty once the results are in.

Yes check the QVL (Qualified Vendor List) in your mobo userguide.
It should be also available on the website of your MOBO vendor.

Alright I'll start looking for some ram tomorrow. One last question though. If my ram was bad, wouldn't my computer not boot into safe mode?

Good question, I can't say for sure. Boot into safe mode, open command prompt and type this: sfc /scannow

Let it run, afterwards it'll let you know if there's any errors on the HDD.

So you've...

1. Reset CMOS

2. Ran Memtest and got no errors. When you say you got no errors, did you get no errors running both sticks at the same time? Or one individual stick at a time? It's suggested that you run ONE STICK AT A TIME in its correct slot for at least 7-10 passes to consider maximum stability.

If the sfc /scannow passes without error, this is a real tough one unless you have

a) Access to a spare HDD.

b) Access to another set of RAM.

He tested his memory and found that if any of the sticks are in slots 1, 3, or 5, then he gets code "E8" which he said means that the board is saying the memory sticks are in the wrong slots. Then he found that if any of the sticks are in slots 2, 4, or 6, then his system locks up (except in Safe Mode) as described in his original post.

Yea I ran memtest w/ one stick of ram at a time, in its correct slot for 8 passes each time.
Im going to mess around w/ the ram timings in bios for a minute and see what happens.
