Headphones that will take advantage of Essence STX?

Thread Starter
Now, I have a really weird music taste, so going one direction with bass or the other is kind of hard for me. I also play a LOT of video games, although that'll be mostly through my speakers, exception being CoD/other fps's.

I've read through the suggested audio equipment a hundred times, but I can NOT settle on a pair of headphones. I want a pair that has a decent amount of bass, however is still good for footsteps in games, and some indie type music. Generally all-around headphones. I'd also like it to benefit from my headphone amp in the Essence.

My budget is up to $250, cheaper if possible, but don't worry otherwise.

Beyerdynamics DT880. A good neutral headphone that comes in a variety of ohms. Your Essence STX would be able to push the 250 or 600 ohm variant well. Also very high quality and you can regularly find them used within your budget.

Shure SRH-840, these are my most listened to headphones. Sounds fantastic being powered by my MOTU unit. It works well for music and games, I got about 3000+ hours usage on this headset. If you have an amp you can get better bass off this set. These are actually monitor headphones so they're suppose to be pretty neutral. I never expected to use these more than my other headsets though.

Denon D2000 if you can find them in your price range. Otherwise choosing a Beyer 770/880/990 model that fits your taste is a good bet.

AKG 701/2 will work off Xonar STX's headphone amp aslong you set it to High Gain, I had a xonar STX my self and its Headphone amp did a decent job of driving the AKG 701/2's.

But since you mention bass then DT880 would be your best shot, the 250ohm ver will work off the Xonar STX amp, but the 600ohm ver will req a external amp.

No the STX should be able to drive the 600 ohm version just fine.

I use the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro (80 ohm impedance version) with my STX. Sounds fantastic. There's also a 250 ohm impedance version of the DT770 Pro.

They are ~$200.
