Upgrading, Would Intel be the right choice?

Hello everyone here at OCN!

Currently I am in need of upgrading my system. I have been in love with AMD for a while because I've always been on such a tight budget but now that I finally started working again, my options are opening up. My question here is that with Bulldozer almost coming out, would it be wise to switch to intel and go the i7 route? As of right now I have little to no knowledge of i7's besides the fact they are expensive but powerful. My budget is around 300-350 for a CPU and motherboard and I dont mind buying used off our marketplace if I have to.

Any information regarding i7 (9xx series) for gaming would be perfect and the ability to overclock is great too.

Note: I am mostly going to game on this computer.

If gaming, the i7 9xx are not worth much, just get an i5 2500K and a budget P67 board (BTW, that's my opinion, if you intend to go for extreme configs with triple GFX, and sound card + PCIe SSD, not really any other choices than X58 but that seems unlikely to me in this case...)

You pretty much answered your own question o_0. i7 is great because it is powerful, alot of headroom for overclocking. But that plus a MOBO might not be within that budget. Well, maybe. You'll have to look. Make sure if you want to overclock you get a MOBO that really helps with that, otherwise good luck. X58 is nice for tripple channel ram, not much else though that is can boast over an i5.

Gamer: i5 2500k, P67 motherboard (or Z68 motherboard).

i7 is better for workstation apps. HT is not really worth the extra money for a gamer.

You could get a 2500k and an asus p8p67 mobo(pro or better if u wanna oc). The cpu u can get for 180 if theres a microcenter near u and mobo u can get for 150-170. Its a great budget combo that most end up getting because its hard to beat the price/performance/future proofing. Hope i helped!

lol hands down this is the best community by far. Answers within 7 minutes of my post ^^

Okay Ill do some research on the i5 2500k and see what I can do within the next few weeks. I dont think i will ever be triple SLing so no need for the x58s.

edit: how do the i5-2500k square off with the phenom II x4 965s?
