You'll have to agree that's a pretty useless and far too general question. "What's the fastest car?" Well...fastest acceleration? To 60? To 100? Highest top speed? Do rocket cars count? Does it have to be a production car? How small of a run counts as 'production'? Etc, etc, etc,.

BANG ON! What the hell is wrong with people! Bickering away with no sense. Bickering how much this cost, this and this bla bla bla.

He asked Intel. Enough said . Dont bring cars into it.

Edit: Thats another thing now that he changed his topic description into 'whats the current top dog for home pc's '. :S

It's still the same problems with the question. What does this home PC need to do? If it's stuff that won't really use 6+ cores for extended periods of time or with much efficiency...then the 2600k is arguably better. The single 2600k cores are faster than the single 990x cores, you just get fewer.

If it's stuff that really thrives on multi threading, then go with dual Xeons instead of a 990x...assuming you're not worried about price. Which if you are, it STILL makes more sense to either go with the cheap and powerful 2600k, or go for the gold and get dual Xeon.

The REAL answer I suppose is whatever the top hexa-core Sandy Bridge chip is when they get released in Q3 or 4 or whenever they're slated for.

Those are the ones I'm waiting for, but I take my own advice and will be building a dual hexa or octa Sandy Bridge Xeon machine. I figure if I'm going to be spending thousands on the case, GPUs, hard drives and full water cooling loop...may as well just throw in another grand or two and be done with it.

Haha, I will admit the 6 Cores still smoke the 2600K in multithreading.

Here's my 2600K @ 5GHz.

You will lose...Oh and guess what....I can game on it just as well...OMG...No kidding!!!
Omg... I'm so jealous that I can take the extra $700 I didn't spend on a cpu and spend it on something else like idk... education?

990x might have the advantage in some benchmarks, but the 2600k comes close if not beats it in the others, for less than half the price. But as stated earlier in this thread, the 2600k and the 990x are both the fastest processors, they both win in certain things.

And i'm not going to take anyone who's rig is called "anti-sandy bridge system" seriously. Just like I don't take balla seriously most of the time.

That's called an analogy. It's used to help the understanding of a foreign concept by relating it to a similar concept that is understood.

In that one benchmark maybe. The 2600k is "best" in other benchmarks.
