Fastest Intel CPU overall is 990x, for sure. But obviously in terms of price/performance the 2600K walks all over it, and if I would have one of course I'd buy the 2600K.

Really, because I think we have all already agreed that 2600k's and SB in general are fast for single threaded apps. Same thing for the raw powah statement, unless something is heavily threaded, the 2600k is faster, clock for clock and overall.
The problem is there isn't an answer since both things are faster at different tasks. Back to the car analogy, some cars are straight line fast and others can corner fast. Who will be first to cross the finish line, well you have to ask what kind of track it is.

2600k - Faster unless heavily threaded
990x - Faster unless application cannot utilize multiple (or more than 8 threads)
Real world, 90% of users are using their proc for things the 2600k will be faster at.
