How can I clone a recovery partition?

Thread Starter
A friend of mine at work gave me her computer to fix because windows was getting all bluey. Long story short, on top of windows going bad her hard drive is on its last legs. The drive makes grinding noises as it reads/writes and the read/write speeds are terribly slow.

The computer the drive was in is a Dell. I already have a replacment hdd but I need to get the recovery partition off the old drive and onto the new drive.

I know they make programs for doing this but im not sure if there is a free alternative to buying an expensive program. Or is it necessary to buy one of those programs?

any help is greatly appreciated.

Well,

Can't you make the recovery CD's? Dell normally has the application pre installed. With these you can rebuild her machine

I should have mentioned, her windows partition is so bad it wont even boot into safe mode. It bsods almost as soon as it gets past the loading screen. Im pretty sure windows is unrepairable. It needs a fresh install. Also I beleive recovery cds were already made by her husband which were then lost some how. And the recovery program will only let you make 1 set of discs. Until I restore to factory default (recovery partition.)

If the drive is screwed that much you're pretty much shafted on making an image of the partition. Remember the partition is still on the failed/failing drive.

I'd say try to procure an OEM disk from somewhere and use your windows code on it.

The drive itself isnt dead, but it is on its way out the door. Its the windows installation that is bad. I could recover the drive from the recovery partion, but I want to get it on the new drive. The drive itself still works.

If your operating system has suffered that much data loss to make it BSOD on boot up, you're not going to get an intact recovery partition...

copuman is right but there is a way, you have to use a external caddy and connect it up to your comp then in the computer managemant section set a drive letter for the partition. their is a run command i will look for it
edit:cant find it right now. i would use a disk though and fresh intsll that way all the bloat that comes with comps these days is unbelevable.
you have a wd caviar, wd do free arcronis on their website for drive owners not the full complete thing but will clone hdd's

I think windows being messed up and the hdd failing are coincedental. I think she did something to windows (not sure what). There really isnt any data loss, I was able to recover all her personal files and what not. I just dont want to run the recovery partition on the failing hdd.

Use Clonezilla to clone the entire old drive to the new drive and run the recovery operation on the new drive.

However since the drive itself is on it's last legs it's unlikely he'll get a valid image.
