Display driver stopped responding and has recovered

Thread Starter
Trying to help a friend fix his computer. Specs below

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955
GPU: Galaxy GeForce GTX 460 GC 768MB
RAM: 4GB
Mobo: ASUS M4A87TD EVO

His GPU has been working fine until recently; he keeps getting the error message below and can't play any games.

He would be playing a game, then it would randomly show little blue squares, then it would freeze, then the "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" message comes up and he has to use the task manager to close the game.

He has tried reinstalling his drivers, doing a clean install with Driver Sweeper, and tried older versions of drivers. The issue still occurs and we don't know what else to do other than to blame the video card for being faulty.

The card is unstable. If it's OC'd, back off the clocks and/or adjust the voltage to try and stabilize it. If it's artifacting and crashing at stock, then it's RMA time.

Is it just me, or has this been happening a lot. I know 2 other people that have this problem, one with a 220 and a 560ti and all running the latest Nvidia drivers. I think something's acting funny in the drivers.

But yeah, if it's OCed, then reset back to stock. If nothing else works, RMA time.

Nothing in the computer is overclocked.

Have you checked the temps, it seems this could be causing the problem, it sounds the GPU is having issues and if it's not software related then it's highly likely there's a problem with the card.

My friend has the same problem with his 550ti, everything was at stock clocks; we tried reinstalling drivers.. using the windows drivers, latest drivers etc. He had to RMA his card, and i'm afraid you might have to do the same
