Tablet Suggestions?

Thread Starter
Hey, I am looking for some tablet advice.

First of all I would like to say I am not a fanboy for any form of PC, Mac, Linux, or otherwise. I have used all of them and still do to this day. My work computer is an iMac. My home computers are custom built. And I use Android phones. Plus I have used Linux.

I simply want a nice quality tablet that is sleek, quality, good screen, and easy to use.

Further, I may want to pick one up for my dad who essentially just plays basic games (solitaire, freecell, etc.) and surfs the net.

Suggestions welcome. Please don't start a flame war. Also, I am not looking to spend $700 or even close on a tablet as I could think of better money spent. I already have.... well technically the wife has a laptop as she uses photoshop on it, etc. for freelance. So, this tablet will be for obvious day to day use.

Thanks.

For you: since you've already used android, I would suggest the Asus Transformer (as will most people here), or of course the Ipad since you mentioned ease of use as a priority. In my opinion you won't get much easier than anything made by apple, but also you won't get a lot of options to change things.

For your dad, I would definitely say an Ipad. For essentials like that, where your not looking to customize anything, and you just want the basic web browser/games, Ipad one or two is the way to go.

The next question is if you shell out the cash for the improved Ipad2, or you could go for the original Ipad from the apple store, refurbished, for $350.

Ok IMO there are simply 3 choices
Asus transformer
Samsung galaxy tab 10.1" not the 7"
iPad 2 (last resort)

Edit: scratch the iPad, there's also the HTC Flyer

I wonder if the galaxy will be better than the transformer. Also, the Tegra 3 enabled tablets come out later this year..... I think personally I can wait until later this year for a tablet. However, father's day is quickly approaching. My only gripe with most Android things are they look fragile and cheap. I hope my perceptions are wrong. I don't understand while other tablet or PC makers can't make things with quality material and good looks like Apple does. Ironically, I think Apple is much more proprietary and money sucking than Microsoft. But, price aside, they do have nice stuff (albeit more people need to support Apple's OS just like Linux).

You sir, are gravely mistaken if you think most Android products are created with cheap materials. HTC mostly uses aluminum in its smartphones, while Motorola makes very tough devices from my experience. Samsung, though extensively uses plastic in most of its products, produces devices that are still durable despite the choice of material. Plastic isn't as breakable than, say, glass.

Not disagreeing, but inevitably you will have a variation of products and qualities in an open platform where anyone can make a product with your software. But, when it comes to looks + quality I still think Apple takes the cake. That is only one portion to consider when buying something. For a lot of people it comes down to what they like and budget. I just don't like being bias in platform. And plastics can be durable for sure. Heck, some of the ipods for instance are some of the worst material choices with the shiny metal backs that get a scratch wayyyy tooo easily. Hate that. Owned one a few years back and it was horrible about getting scuffs, etc.

But, nevertheless it is mostly taste and quality varies. I just like the thin, minimalistic approach Apple goes for along with an aluminum body. Some of these other tablet companies have a huge bezel, chunky, or have their name plastered on the product in a very unattractive way like some ghetto shirt with the brand taking up a large portion of the front. There is something to be said for elegance and Apple also does quality fairly well and gets simple things right like trackpads, panels, etc. (albeit at a premium of a price).

THe Asus Transformer offers the absolute best bang for the buck right now (if you can find one). IPS LED screen, Honeycomb, solid build quality, and its only $399 for 16GB. Can't go wrong....
