How did I miss that? - Z68 limitation...

While looking at different motherboards for my new Sandy Bridge setup I chose an MSI Z68A-GD80 because layout and other features looked like what I wanted and I have always had good luck with the higher end MSI boards for the last 8 or so years that I have purchased MSI, Asus, and Gigabyte boards...

Well apparently I need reading glasses because I do not know how I missed the following while comparing motherboards...

Quote:
PCI_E5 supports up to PCIE x4 speed (due to the limitation of the chipset, when the PCI_E5 has been installed with a PCIE x4 device, 1 eSATA ports, SATA7 port, 1 onboard front USB 3.0 connectors, 2 PCI slots and 1394 rear IO port will become unavailable.

- When both of the PCIE x1 (PCI_E1, PCI_E3) slots have been installed, only the PCI_E1 slot is available, using one PCIE x1 slot is recommended.• 3 PCI Express gen2 x1 slots
Just did a quick run through looking at motherboards from the other manufacturers and do not see a similar note... so is this a flaw with just the MSI board itself or is it really a chipset limitation that affects all the other mfg boards as well?

Either way I am feeling like this atm...

This chart has a comparison of all the P67/Z68 mobos.
http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...omparison.html
As you can see, only the Top tier of mother boards support 8x/8x/8x

Two words: Twin Frozr. Never heard about this till now, if it's true, I'm not impressed with Z68. P67 is still enough.

I'd disagree. MSI has some of the best custom cooled graphics cards if not the best.

That's common with all Z68 boards, simply a limitation of the chipset as you had mentioned. There isn't enough PCIe lanes to drive each of those devices, thus some have to be disabled in order for others to work.

Usually this is resolved by adding a PCIe switch chip (PLX) but I'm not sure if MSI decided to add one to that particular board. My GD85 has it.

Yea, but I am specifically talking about how if the 3rd slot is filled it shuts off all those other listed I/O ports!

Yep, I have owned several of their Twin Frozr cards and they are TOP NOTCH! I posted this just to ask and see what other Z68 owners may know or have experience and see is it just an MSI motherboard problem or does it really exist as a chipset limitation for all Z68 motherboards... I honestly cannot say I saw anyone address something like what is quoted in my OP while I was reading articles, reviews, and threads on the internets about Z68 vs P67...

Aaaah I see so then it would be a case of other manufacturers using a work around on their board and MSI deciding they didn't want to spend the extra penny then? +1 rep to you sir. This is solid information to know, wish I could have read about this sooner and not after purchase...

Yup, sadly.

But no worries. I was thinking about opting for that same board if I ever decided to switch to Z68.

the ati is like that too, which is why i stuck w/ the deluxe, it has a few extra lanes and doesnt kill off other slots.

Well it is what it is, TBH it doesn't affect me since I was never planning on using that last slot for anything and the motherboard may end up in my wifes rig in the near future anyways (aka when I plan my next unnecessary upgrade).

Darn I'll just know next time to lookout for something goofy like that I wonder if a piece like that shouldn't be added to the linked p67/z68 motherboard spreadsheet?
