If I can't find a case then I will use a cardboard box

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I'm looking for a very specific style of microATX
or uATX case;

1. PSU under the MB, main feature must have
2. 2.5in HD only, under the MB alongside the PSU
3. No DVD slot, use USB when needed which is very rare these days.
4. Takes full length video card (GTX 570), maybe two

Cooling must be top down. The CPU cooler is the ThermalRight AXP140 RT, its a low profile down draft air flow cooler, clean air should be coming in from the top (above the CPU cooler) and then out though the PSU sitting under the MB, with the PSU intake fan sitting directly under the CPU back plate.

Also a grill opposite the GPU fan for GPU cooling, with GPU hot vent at the back.

No other grills, and hopefully no need for any case fans. Actually nothing, just a small cube, with main airflow in the top and out through the PSU at the back

Any ideas?

Otherwise its down to Ikea for a cardboard box!

Hmmmm.. a very trick predicament...

Have you considered maybe a cube-style case or perhaps building one on your own?

Anyways, here's a couple cube cases:

Sorry, but these guys are a little pricey

Good luck

Opposed to the idea of a tech bench? Lian Li makes these and they come in red, black, and silver.

Edit: oh well never mind this won't work. You are using a micro atx not a mini itx. It would work just the bottom 3 PCI slots would hang off the end of the case.

I think the case I will list below will be as close as I can get for you.

IN WIN Dragon Slayer Black 0.6mm SECC MicroATX

Now you do not have to have the all the fans going on this case. The method you explained above is just not the most economical way to remove heat from your case. The laws of physics state that heat rises. I do not know whay that CPU cooler is set up as a downdraft but personally I would turn the fan around and set it as Updraft. And you definatley do not want to run the hot air from your CPU through the PSU using it as exhaust. Its just not smart. Especially with that GPU crankin heat too. Not to mention you will be trying to force the hot air down to the psu fan for exhaust. If you bought the case above and turned the fan around to updraft rather than downdraft the hot air from your cpu will be exhausted out the side panel of the case. and you could leave the fans included in the case or take them out. your choice.

The IN WIN Dragon Slayer Black is too large, its just like a normal mini-tower. If I were to go down that route I already have a case preference.

And moving the heat, the only concern would be the GPU and that expels the heat out of the rear. The is very minor heat leakage inside the case, but that is easily fixed and reduced to next to zero.

Hot air can be persuaded to move in other directions other than up! If the CPU fan is the only major inlet for cool air and the PSU in the only outlet for air then heat has only one direction to go. If PSU fan is able to match or exceed the CFM of the CPU fan then everything should be ok.

And actually changing the direction of the CPU fan performs worse than down-draft, something I have already tested.

I've looked at these, and yes, it would be ideal if they supported mini itx. Shame!

Hmmm ok Try these?

Antec Skeleton ~ Has the psu on the bottom like you requested. Not enclosed though. That top 250mm LED fan can be turned to be a downdraft fan to bring fresh cold air directly to your cooler. And with it being so big it will move a lot of air with pretty much no noise.

Sunbeam Acrylic UFO Cube Case - Clear
Sunbeam Acrylic UFO Cube Case - UV Blue
Case above again has PSU on the bottom. Yes there are 120mm Fan holes pre drilled. You can choose to put fans(1 intake 1 exhaust) in them for cooling or just get some nice fan grilles to cover them.(filters too as this will show all the dust in your case). Mobo tray does not have a lot of ventilation holse for you to set it with the PSU as you exhaust.

All in all I have to admit. I have spent quite a bit of time and effort looking for the exact specifications that you are looking for. To be honest. You won't find it. You will have to make adjustments no matter what you get. You will find that pretty much every computer case manufactuer make their case with the ventilation for the mobo/cpu area. They do not produce cases that use the PSU as exhaust. Mainly because its just not a good idea. BTW the air coming out of the back of my PSU is much hotter than the air coming from the exhaust on my case. This tells me that the PSU does not need to have any more heat added to it.
Simply put. If you want what you specified you will have to build your own. I will tell you that you will run into issues with heat. GPUs and PSUs are not designed to exhaust any other heat than what they themslves produce. And forcing the heat from your cpu and mobo DOWN to the bottom mount PSU against its normally natural tendency to RISE is only going to cause you problems.
Thats being said Good luck with your build and I hope you find what you are looking for.

It's a bit different from what you want, but I think the Silverstone Ft03 would work well for you.
