Can someone explain to me some website terms?

Thread Starter
I'm looking to really get into web development this summer. I have previous experience with PHP, MySQL, Javascript, and HTML+CSS, so I know how to get started coding. Problem is, I'm having trouble googling the information I need.

For my first project I'm trying to make a copy of this webpage:
http://kealyracca.weebly.com/digital.html

However, I don't know what they did to make this. The links on the side is called a side-bar, if I'm not mistaken, but I don't know the other terms to look up. What do you call it when everything is centered despite page width? What do you call a center page that changes depending on the links you click without the page itself changing? Just point me in the right tutorial direction and I'll begin my quest in earnest.

One things, the page itself actually changes, so i'm quite confused of what you want. Which parts does not changed? What do you mean with everything is centered?

Pull a screenshot and use some paint to make it clear

If I remember correctly they are different frames. The right frame changes based on the left side but the left side is static. I've only really used frames in dreamweaver though so I can't really give you more than that.

Those are actually just separate static pages with a shared secondary navigation ( in the side bar ).

You could make a single page with just your sidebar content in it. Then in each of your pages you could use PHP to include that sidebar file in that position so it is the same without replicating code across pages.

The other way with a little more "cool factor" would be to use Javascript to load the right image section dynamically with click events ( DOM injection ) which is not too difficult to do if you use a js framework like jQuery.

The image view when you click on an image to enlarge it is called a lightbox effect. I would recommend PrettyPhoto for that but there are many others like colorbox etc.

Oh yeah, avoid frames. There are very few applications where they are appropriate any more. Lots of better ways to achieve same functionality.
