Startup issue

Having a new problem with the AMD PC. This thing is pretty touchy when it comes to stupid random problems like this, it's starting to get downright bloody annoying.

This time it won't boot into Windows. Here's what happens:

"starting Windows" screen all goes by normally, possibly a little slow.
"welcome" screen goes ok
screen fades to black, a dialogue box tells me to activate Windows, and that my "activation period has expired". I click "OK".
A second dialogue box tells me "It's important to use genuine Microsoft software". I click "OK".
There is a blue artifact-ish flicker along the top edge of the monitor, then it fades ALL the way to black. Like, turning the monitor off sort of black. Only option from here has been to restart.

In Safe Mode:
in the driver loading list, C:\\windows\\system32\\CLASSPNP.SYS takes AGES to load (~20sec)
boots to desktop OK
Uninstalled Performance Monitor v4 which I installed very recently and didn't quite work properly..
system restored to two days ago. Boot up outside of safe mode still fails the same way.

Tried Safe Mode with networking
Boots to desktop Ok with the same lag on CLASSPNP.SYS

Please give me some suggestions of where to go from here.

Graphics drivers to blame

have had nothing but trouble with the crossfired 6870s. Official drivers refuse to work properly, they are glitchy as anything. It's a real problem and I'm not sure there is a solution

That was the latest release Catalyst series 11.5 drivers from AMD's website that caused this problem!

Did you try reinstalling windows ?

It might be related to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326122 ?

Thirdly, you could try changing some settings in the BIOS that are related to the graphical boot manager (or at least to my knowledge).

1. Disable CPI APIC support
2. Under PCI/PnP settings, set Plug and Play O/S = YES.

Good luck

Tried a fresh start - formatted C:\\ and reinstalled Windows 7, then motherboard software, then reinstalled graphics driver software, all from manufacturers' DVDs - no internet used at this point - and she blackscreened again. Same problem outlined >here< exactly.

I really am running out of ideas.

Currently running with retarded system detecting both cards as "standard VGA graphics adapter" so it'll function in Windows.. and hunting for solutions.

COULD IT BE

Somehow I am overdrawing the PSU in a way I haven't thought of at all?

The display is set to switch to some non existent screen upon desktop? Like HDMI out or something? That even possible?

Windows or BIOS updates - could they possibly be contributing to the problem?

I really am running out of ideas. Every one I try seems to be my last straw but I will keep hounding this until I get it right.

Xenthos:
sounds closely related to that problem, given that when booting into safe mode, CLASSPNP.SYS sits on the bottom there for AAAaaaaaages.

I will try to look for those BIOS settings, thanks for your brainstorm.

I also wondered about installing an early CCC version then bombing it with a recent DRIVER only? would that have any chance of working?

just stumbled across this, any thoughts?

Interesting. Did some more digging. Turns out that while everyone seems to think the boot is stalling at classpnp.sys, it is in fact stalling at the NEXT file in the boot sequence, which is cdrom.sys (in my case, anyway). That makes a bit of sense. In my case, there was a DVD drive while I installed and configured. It was in a docking base. In normal use, there is no dvd drive (it is a Thinkpad, which has no internal drive), and if I configure a boot log, the system reports that cdrom.sys did NOT load.

Given the fact that when it failed to boot the repair option claimed that the boot failed because a resource was not available, perhaps the BIOS was reporting a cdrom was available but the system could not find it?

But I'm just guessing. I wish that Microsoft would weigh in on this one. It has been going on for a long time if you Google for it.

Also came across these posts suggesting I might try playing around with HDDs .. changing them to IDE fixed a similar problem for this guy:

Try enter to BIOS and change the disk mode from AHCI to IDE, that works for me.

My computer:

Acer Aspire 5536

Athlon X2 64

Win7 32bits

and this bloke says his issue was caused by a HDD as well (not even the OS drive)

a late reply from me, but is migth be helpfull for people with the same problem as above. I got the classpnp problem but none of the solutions helped for me. A re-install was the only solution i could think of but even in a re-install the system hung during the installation. I begun to think what the problem could be and started to disconnect everything. At last i got to the harddrives and there was the problem, the cable was fine, but the d-drive (not the windows 7 drive) was not. After disconnecting it windows started and made me a very happy man.

so I will try open my mind to those issues and have a play in BIOS.

Now that I think of it, AHCI was a pain in the ass to set up, and I finally got it working just before I moved to Townsville, around the same time as the computer first started having these issues.

I refuse to get too excited just yet, until the whole thing is fixed and works 100%.

I've heard about that HDD issue that fixed the problem aswell.

As for the PSU. 650W is stretching it but I doubt that it'd have this effect.

PSU should be easily capable of running your system with breathing room, so unless it's faulty there shouldn't be an issue here.

I'm not very expert on IDE/AHCI and configuration, so I'll leave this aspect to someone else!
