I would imagine that in the future, consoles will get more features and laptops will get smaller and lighter. The devices probably won't end up far from each other. Although the computer would probably still have more flexible hardware since it isn't purpose built.

They have their places, but you can't directly compare their value.

As a gaming solution ALONE - the XBOX is a better value to most. If you use computers, a console is redundant unless you want to play exclusives. That's my opinion anyway.
That was what I assumed. The OP was talking about PC gaming.

Most people have PC's with keyboard and mouse anyway. You dont need a 10,000 dpi razor mouse to game, and most will have a monitor since PC's are pretty much as common in a household as telephones. Besides it doesn't cost that much anyway.
Majority of the time people will only need the main components. And for $500 its easily doable, you can google $500 PC gaming rig or even search on OCN. Without AA or AF you could pretty much get similar graphics, if not better (1080 res?) than consoles. Plus you'll have all the extra capabilities that you'll get with PC.

You're also forgetting, you can do way more on PC, add that to the fact there millions (literally) of unique games on PC, mostly free (From MMO games, to casual games to enthusiast games).

Think about it, you'd spend $200-300 on a PC for general home use, office/school work. An extra $200-300 to make it for gaming i can see people doing. Since $300 for a PS3 even for today is quite a bit considerring the shatty hardware that you get.
Nowadays most people have laptops or MAC's. My point is if you are talking about playing video games on your PC and you are only going to invest enough so it matches the performance of a xbox or playstation then there is no point. Consoles are much less of a headache.

Also you seem to forget not everyone knows how to rip parts out of a computer and put parts in. See you are coming at it from the perspective of someone who knows about computers. I am coming at it from someone like my mother or father....the general public.

That's a huge problem. IMO, a PC game should be playable on relatively low end machines. That doesn't mean it has to look like crap, just look at what Valve's doing with the Source engine these days.

Also, it should work in the first place.

I think it will all be rolled into one. Consoles are trying to meet not only your gaming need but also your entertainment needs.

The funny thing is all these devices are starting to do the same thing. iPad, Cell Phones, Consoles, Laptops ect.....

I have no clue what the future holds but one thing seems pretty clear, the days of the big tower PC's for the general consumer are coming to an end.

Its up to the developer to decide what they want in a game. Source cannot do what is done in the witcher 2. So they created their own engine.

IMO, a game should be playable on a system that caters to what the developers are aiming for creatively. They should not compromise their goals just to support the extremely budgeted person. those people should have an xbox instead.

source engine isnt something worth bragging about. Valve made the decision to make their games playable on alot of systems, but remember when half life 2, it was actually a top of the line game that couldnt be played on every system. Since then, valve has not put the time or effort into pushing forward again.

A better solution would simply be an industry agreement that consoles were x86 and used DirectX. The consoles would have a way of telling a game what it's running on, so the settings can be set automatically, while the PC lacks such a flag, enabling the user to set the settings instead.

For using the TV method sure, but where are you going to put the keyboard and mouse?

My point is if you are going to build a $500 PC that performs like a xbox 360 why not just buy an xbox 360?
Hey Zippy, the 80's called. Seriously, practically anyone has a computer already. Hell, even a laptop is suitable for gaming nowadays, which includes all the things you mentioned (mouse, keyboard, speakers, screen, and your lap is the desk). Honestly, that's a crappy argument. It's fully possibly to make a gaming PC for 500 USD, able to play all new releases on, what, medium settings? You don't need much nowadays.

At the end of the day it is a business. Companies are out to make money. So if they see a market for the this game on the PS3 and Xbox and feel it would be cost effective for them to port it. Then why not?
