This is true, I know that 580's slow down until you use at least a 4 series card. There was a great review of using low 2 series cards and 8-9 series as well and the 580 suffered from having to wait for the older card. I'm not sure if this applies to newer ATi cards but it would seem appropriate.

Yes you have to jump through a lot of hoops. It can be a real pain. As far as performance decline, no. When using physx with an AMD system, ANY Nvidia card with show an improvement when physx is enabled granted the card supports physx. That being said, I used a 9600GSO for a while. I could max out metro2033 and get around 33 fps. It used around 480MB of vram so I suggest a card with at least 512. Best card IMO right now would be a 260, or something to that nature. You can get one for around $100, and they will run physx very well. other options can be a GT240 and 9800GTX.

but dedicated physx card would be cheaper?

Cheaper than what? A gtx580?

cheaper than gtx260

GTS 450, 9600, 9800GT, but I really wouldn't suggest it because it made no FPS difference for me using a 9800GT along with my 5770's. (Metro 2033)

I mentioned a GT240, 9800GTX and a 9600GSO. All of those would be cheaper.

Use your CPU.

I tossed in a spare 8800GT (512MB) in to try it as a physx card, and my performance DROPPED LIKE A STONE over using my CPU for physx.

dropped like a stone = 60+FPS on cpu-physx down to less than 30FPS with the 8800GT as a dedicated physx card. (in UT3 with physx plugin and maps.)

This was in my sigrig.

I know theres a way to install the physx drivers with only an AMD card and set it up so your CPU is used, it might be simple, or it might not, either way im sure theres some thread somewhere that shows you how to do it.

I HIGHLY recommend at least trying it, before you go wasting money on something that may give you worse performance, though a 260c216 might be better or at least equal to CPU PhysX.

With any single GPU AMD card currently on the market you should be able to get away w/any nV 8xxx series (or above) card that has at least 64 shaders.

Memory amount/type is irrelevant in the equation, a physX card is strictly used for on-the-fly calculations. If you look at the stats in AB it may 'look' like memory is being used on the physX card, but it's really not. You'll find it's always the exact same mem usage amount as the rendering card.

I'm using an 8800GT for physX with my 470's in SLI, and it absolutely DOES NOT 'bottleneck' my rendering performance on actual games like Batman AA and Mafia 2.

Note that the pink line is SLI 470's + 8800GT Dedicated, the blue line is SLI w/physX running on one of the 470's, on both charts.

The claims around here of what you need for a physX card are often wildly exaggerated.

SLI PHYSX TEST RESULTS (470 SLI + dedicated 8800GT vs running physX on one of the 470's in SLI):

NOTE THE LABELS ON THE LINES BELOW ARE REVERSED - PINK IS USING 8800GT
Having a *dedicated* physX card in Mafia 2 makes the cloth physX run on the GPU, otherwise they run on the CPU no matter what ... which is fairly crushing to performance.

SINGLE CARD + DEDICATED PHYSX CARD RESULTS:
