Memory amount/type is irrelevant in the equation, a physX card is strictly used for on-the-fly calculations. If you look at the stats in AB it may 'look' like memory is being used on the physX card, but it's really not. You'll find it's always the exact same mem usage amount as the rendering card.

I'm using an 8800GT for physX with my 470's in SLI, and it absolutely DOES NOT 'bottleneck' my rendering performance on actual games like Batman AA and Mafia 2.

Note that the pink line is SLI 470's + 8800GT Dedicated, the blue line is SLI w/physX running on one of the 470's, on both charts.

The claims around here of what you need for a physX card are often wildly exaggerated.
Thats actually quite suprizing, or I just have terrible luck, because my results were completely backwards. (though I do have just a single 470) With CPU my FPS was FAR higher than when I had the 8800GT as a dedicated PhysX card.

Also, vantage points went straight down the toilet as well.

Lowest is the 8600GT. Physx requires an 8 series card with at least 32 stream processors.

SLI PHYSX TEST RESULTS (470 SLI + dedicated 8800GT vs running physX on one of the 470's in SLI):

NOTE THE LABELS ON THE LINES BELOW ARE REVERSED - PINK IS USING 8800GT
Having a *dedicated* physX card in Mafia 2 makes the cloth physX run on the GPU, otherwise they run on the CPU no matter what ... which is fairly crushing to performance.

SINGLE CARD + DEDICATED PHYSX CARD RESULTS:

looks great, thanks

9600gt, 8800gt or better preferably, a 260 for no bottlenecks

physx will kill performance unless u have a 260 or a 450... something in that range.

You shouldn't group the 9600GT and GSO. The 9600 GSO is a re-banded 8800GS.

Out of the bunch that you have listed however, the 9800GT would offer the best PhysX performance. IIRC, 112 Stream processors, 256 bit, and usually ~512 MB GDDR3.

An 8800GT would also be not bad. Even a 768MB GDDR3 9600 GSO is not bad for PhysX at all. I've used one and it works great. Had no issues with any games or any bottlenecking of the sort. I used this one.
Not quite as good as the 9800GT, but definitely far from a slouch. 192 bit, 768MB GDDR3, 96 stream processors. And with its extra 256 MB of memory over the 9800GT and other 512 MB variants, it might actually serve better as a dedicated PhysX card.

There was a post just a couple of days ago wish i could find it. That showed i low end dedicated physics card actually reduced fps when compared to letting a single 580 process the physics itself. ill look and see if i can find it again.
