Sorry, missed that. Check around your camera shops. Often you have to ask if they have refurbed nikon gear. Someone will be your "local" outlet for Nikon and it'll save you a fair amount.

I found a Nikkor VL10 80-200mm f/2.8 ED for the same price as a 55-300mm. Too bad they have no info on it, it's a refurb i guess. respectable company tho...

edit: I pulled the trigger, would have been mad if it was gone before realizing i should have bought it. And I can still cancel. I realize I am going to lose the AF on my d3100, but I can live with that.

macro ?

the 60mm f/2.8 or the 105 f/2.8 VR

range ... the 55-300 would do nicely imo

but if you can get something like the Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-S

The 80-200 f/2.8 will be a great lens! The earliest versions have relatively slow AF, but the AF-D and AF-S versions are fantastic. If it's indeed the AF-D version, time to save up for a D7000

And if it doesn't work out, then I throw my vote in for either the Nikon 70-300 VR or the Tamron 70-300 VC. Both excellent lenses.

It's the 1988 AF version, so it has slow AF. Then again the 55-300 does not have the fastest AF either AFAIK. The D7000 is probably coming later, but until then my camera will do just fine

Let's just hope the 80-200mm is good as new

Hmm... Well you might love it or hate it in that case. Slow focus, and it's a push/pull zoom... If it's in decent shape I suppose it might be worth keeping, but if it's at all beaten up I'd sell it and get something a little more recent.
