I looked throught all the guides and what not but im still pretty lost.
Dont really have a budget but would like to make it as low as possible.

Would like something that i can upgrade as i learn skills and techniques and I have never dont serious photography.

So i do not need something thats top of the line but would like something thats good.

Please let me know, if you need anything else.

What's your budget and are you okay buying used/refurbished, or do you only want new?

Dosent matter if its used or refurbished. But would prefer New. and if its in Best Buy its a plus. I have a card in the store and i havent used it in a while so i woudnt mind putting it on there.

Not sure what ranges the good DSLR's come in

I'd read up on the Canon Loyalty Program. That Rebel XS with 18-55 IS for $319 is an extremely attractive price.

In all honesty, as a beginner even the lowest end DSLR would be a good choice. They're cheap, great to practice on, and while they lack the bells and whistles of newer models, they can still make some great images and have all the features necessary to get you immersed in photography.

It says I have to sign in to view it. Rather than making an account just for that, could you post a summary of the program? I'm also interested in this...

When you pick out an DSLR make sure you hold it in your hands before you buy it. You do that so you know it fits in your hands and feels comfortable as some DSLRs are much larger than others and if you have small hands, you can find it awkward to hit certain buttons when shooting.

You should make an account for POTN. It's a fantastic forum site for Canon, plus we reference it a lot around here.

I actually have to go soon, so I hope you guys don't mind a terribly tl;dr version:

CLP is a program where you trade in a broken Canon point and shoot for a refurbished DSLR at a very cheap price. If you don't have a broken Canon P&S, you can literally buy one online for about $15 for savings of hundreds (literally) on a DSLR.

After getting your broken P&S, you call this number: 1 (866) 443-8002

You then select the option for CLP and talk to a CS Rep, and you tell them what camera you want. Current offerings:

Quote:
Canon XS - $319.99 (Removed from Program March 31, 2011)
Canon XS with 18-55 IS Kit Lens - $319.99 (Price cut from $399.99 April 1, 2011)

Canon T1i - $415.99
Canon T1i with 18-55 IS Kit Lens - $479.99

Canon T2i - $447.99 (Added to Program Feb 1, 2011 @ $511.99. Price cut March 1, 2011)
Canon T2i with 18-55 IS Kit Lens - $511.99 (Added to Program Feb 1, 2011 @ $575.99. Price cut March 1, 2011)

Canon 40D - $559.20 (Removed from Program March 1, 2011)
Canon 40D with 28-135 IS Kit Lens - $719.20 (Removed from Program March 1, 2011)

Canon 50D - $562.69 (Price cut March 1, 2011 from $719.20)
Canon 50D with 28-135 IS Kit Lens - $665.09 (Price cut March 1, 2011 from $839.20)

Canon 7D - $1,087.20 (Price increased to $1,119.20 briefly in early November 2010, but reduced back to original pricing in December 2010)
Canon will then ship out your DSLR with two-day shipping (free). You then have 14 days to mail them your broken P&S. You are not required to ship your camera first and have to wait for them to verify before they release their DSLR. The DSLR will ship out immediately, and so long as Canon gets the P&S within 14 days, they're happy.
