HD6950 - bios flash bricked it :-(

Thread Starter
I just tried to flash the bios in my new XFX HD6950 2GB with a 6970 one, and failed miserably, it seems. When I boot up, the monitor doesn't display anything, and the card's fans seem to go full blast (much louder than usual, at least). I don't have a second PCIe slot to fit my old card in and I don't have onboard graphics. I've tried "blind flashing" by formatting a USB stick into a DOS boot disk, with atiflash onboard, with my backed up, original bios (as a rom file), with "atiflash -f -p 0 bios.rom" as my autoexec.bat command, with no result.

Any further tips or tricks, or anything I may have overlooked in this process would be appreciated.

PS: My card doesn't appear to have a BIOS switch on it. Oddly, it has a 1 and 2 on the board, where the switch should be, but nothing physically there on further inspection.

does it have the dual bios switch? what method did you use to flash it the first time?

Ha, you asked before I could edit my post. Nope, no dual switch. I initially flashed it with ati winflash - this all began immediately after it rebooted.

You should have done better research because noone would recommend you to flash your 6950 without the bios switch. I think there's a method which you can blind flash it back but it's pretty tricky. Do you have a spare card? or a dummy plug? I'm not sure if that way would work but i think you can try booting up with your spare card as main, and your 6950 as 2nd card (no CF bridge or anything, plug the dummy plug in), monitor is plugged in your main card. That way you can flash your 6950 back imo.

do you have any friends w/ a mobo that has 2 pcie 16x/8x slots? you could do the flash on their pc if the blind flash is too hard.

this here... Find a card, even if its a cheapo pci card just for display purposes and reflash it...

flashing without a dual bios, on a non-reference card... yikes. listen to the other posters if you want to try and fix this.

and look before you leap next time.

All that for a VERY marginal gain. Like suggested, find a cheap PCI card and try again.
