.MOD files open, but are cut WAY short

Did a forum search in this section and read through this post...(http://www.overclock.net/video-camer...pc-hd-not.html) to no avail. Haven't been able to give SD Copy a try but I'm not sure it will help in this situation.

My folks have a Panasonic SDR-26k and it shoots .MOD files, all of which open on my PC with no problem and play in Windows Media Player. So on a family vacation from a while back, there was some footage that we filmed to an SD card on our SDR-26k camcorder. After transporting the file the first time onto my PC, the file registered as being only 31 seconds long which was far too short. Later on when I was viewing the file a few months later, I viewed it in Windows Media Player just as I did before but the file was the original recording's size, approximately 2 minutes long. It has been stored in the same location since then (my WD caviar black HDD in an antec external cooling enclosure) and now only shows the 31 seconds of the clip. All the programs I had installed before that might have made it play fully due to a variety of compatibility with video codecs (VLC, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate, DivX, etc.) all bear the same result....it only opens the video and plays the first 31 seconds of it.

This wouldn't bother me as much if I hadn't opened it in its entirety before. The disheartening part is that if this video is cut short and memories from our vacation are lost on this video, who knows what else was cut short as well in the process. I've done a clean install of windows 7 ultimate since the last time I opened the file fully and successfully in its full run time. Can't think of any more video codec updates or programs to install. Any help is greatly appreciated.

**I have checked the original file in 3 locations, the Caviar black hdd that I played it from successfully before, the Seagate ext HDD I backed up onto, and a Data DVD I burned with all the videos in file format with the same result.
