Strange Windows Login Issue on Domain

Thread Starter
Hello all,

Have about 115 users on our domain. Just a few weeks ago a new issue has started up.

Problem #1:
On occasion, I'll get a call about a user who can't log in to their machine. They said that they have tried 20+ times and it won't let them in, even if their password is correct. Oddly, our domain policy has a lockout at 4 failed attempts.

Once the user reboots the machine, they can log in, and the 4 attempt lock out policy is once again valid.

Problem #2
Another issue is if the user is logged in, they will randomly lose rights/access to network shares. If you log out, they receive problem #1 and cant log in until reboot.

Any help on this would be appreciated, but not urgent considering we only get a call about it every other day.

Thanks!

Sounds like the computer is having network issues. For problem 1, the computer isn't having network access or talking to the domain controller and so it's logging on locally instead of authenticated with AD. For the second problem, network issues still sound like the culprit like it's losing connections and isn't restoring the connections until logging back in.

Check to see if they're having any other network issues or experience any other connection issues like browsing the web.

The issue occurs on more than 1 machine , and it's quite random. It generally does not happen to the same user more than once.

If they are logged in and dont have access to certain shares, they can generally connect to the web and outside world.

None of these problems sound normal or have I ever heard of them. For the first problem, it sounds like it's A) not authenticating or wanting to talk to the AD for some reason, and B) it doesn't sound like it's grabbing the group policies setup by the DC. But if it's random and not on the first login, it just doesn't make sense.

What's your DC running? 2k8? 2k8 R2?

I'll keep thinking, but I've never encountered anything like this or even heard of it.

What's the OS of the clients? Are all the clients that are having these issues running the same OS or are there varied editions? Just trying to find a common variable to look at and work with. Did you do any updates to the server recently for when this started happening? How long had the server been running fine before this all started happening?

I have only seen these problems on Windows XP machines. However, I have a script that i can pull up A.D users and unlock accounts and reset passwords. Just last night it could not find any users. After a reboot the script worked fine. I am using Windows 7
