ASRock p67 Ex4 Won't Boot With RAM in specific slots. Help!

post #1 of 9
Thread Starter
Just finished a new build with this MOBO and am having a weird problem. If I put any RAM stick in the two leftmost slots, I get a 38 error on the Dr. Debug LED Display on the MOBO itself. which the manual describes as "Post Memory North Bridge Initialization." If I put the RAM sticks in the two rightmost slots, the computer boots up just fine, but obviously in Single Channel. Any help?

So you have 4 slots of RAM:
1 2 3 4

Your modules should be going in:
2 4

Or:
1 3

Read your manual as to which of the above it should be. I know ASUS default DIMMs will be 2 4.

Yes the Ram is supposed to go in 24. The problem is, if any stick is in slot 1 or 2, I get that 38 error code. That means that configuring it as 1 3, 2 4, or 1 2 keeps the system from booting. It only works if I have a single stick in 3 or 4, or set it up as 3 4.

Hmm weird because i'm using the same board and i have sticks in all 4 slots.

@BigredNY

Some more information about your ram would be nice, a link perhaps, easier to help you then.

Have you set the ram frequency and timing manual or do you run "Auto", if auto, which frequency and timing does the UEFI reports that you run?

I just fiddled with it some more, same deal. I tried starting it up with a single stick in a different slot each time. Error 38 with it in 1 2, starts up fine in 3 4. I wish I could get this resolved without RMA because I really can't afford to not have a PC right now but its looking like I'm going to have to.

Edit: Ram is here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231314

I haven't even gone into the MOBO to set anything. This is a fresh build with no messing around with any settings. I'll try and check the frequencies now.

Edit #2: The RAM settings are at 1.5-v. DRAM Frequency is at DDR3-1600. Latency is 9, Delay is 9, Precharge Time is 9, Active Time is 28.

@BigredNY

It should start up just fine with 1600C9, I don´t think you have faulty ram but to be sure you can run Memtest86+ or HCI Design Memtest with the one stick at the time in either slot 3 or 4.

Check so that it doesn´t run the ram with the XMP profile, it might cause problem since the Ripjaws was intended for the P55 chipset, set the frequency and timing manual to 1333 9-9-9 28 2N 1,50v and try with then in slot 1 3 or 2 4.

Another thing to check is if there´s any bend pin in the CPU socket, since the memory controller is in the CPU and if a pin is not in contact with the CPU it might causes the fault.

What cooler do you run?

Why I ask is that you may have seated it to tight, to loose or it might not be seated even on the CPU, those things might also cause the problem.

Btw, welcome to OCN , hope you going to like it, great forum.

In the User CP you can fill out your "System Information", easier for people to help when they know what gear you run.

Ghostleader I don't know how to thank you enough. I took out the CPU and sure enough there was a bent pin the lower right part of the socket. Got a flathead and carefully bent it back. Put it back together, put the RAM in 2 4 and it boots perfectly. I need to test 1 3 tomorrow as its kinda late now, but at least I know that it was probably fixed.
Thank you once again, and this community is wonderful.
