Console convert looking for PC gaming bliss

Thread Starter
Hi everybody,

So I've been a console gamer for awhile, and I've never owned a PC, always been a Mac. Fell in love with Halo:CE, Halo 2 kept it going for me, Halo 3 disappointed me a bit and Reach is garbage. Because of this, I've been playing BC2 a bunch, and I absolutely love the game, but three things are killing it for me:

1. Spawn camping

2. Teammate blowing up our team's heli(s).

3. Latency issues.

Now, if I'm not mistaken, these three issues can be nearly eliminated on the right server. Also, it would be really nice to be able to run Pro/Engineer at home so I can VPN into work on sickish days.

So, here is the list I've come up with so far:

ASRock Z68 Extreme4

Intel Core i5-2500K

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600

EVGA SuperClocked GeForce GTX 560 Ti

2x Kingston SSDNow V Series 30GB 2.5" 30GB SSD

2x Western Digital Caviar Black WD5002AALX 500GB 7200

CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W

Antec Nine Hundred Two V3

Microsoft SIDEWINDER X4

Logitech G500

Windows 7 Professional

That brings the total to $1600, which gives me a bit of breathing room. I could go as high as $2000, but I'd rather not. I'm hoping for graphics that look at least as good as they do on the xbox @ 1280x1024 for now, 1920x1080 eventually. Also, it would be really nice to be pretty future-proof, with no necessary upgrades for at least 3 years.

Please let me know if I'm way off-base, but be gentle please!

P.S. I'm really new to this, so this list is meant to be my Newegg shopping cart. If I will need anything else, please let me know, down to the cabling. (I have tools)

Edit: I forgot to explain the SSD and HDD choices. I want to put the SSDs in Raid 0 for boot and select applications, and one of the HDDs will be local, one for a friend's off-site backup (crashplan). He and I have roughly the same budget and are planning on building the same machines. Eventually I'd like to fill that out to 4x HDDs with 2 in Raid 0 and two for crashplan.

Looks good, make sure the EVGA card is the AR variant so that you get a lifetime warranty, also I would get a single Samsung Spinpoint f3 1TB rather than 2 500GB WD drives. Finally, since you have the budget I would suggest getting a 1080p monitor now rather than later, it is such a huge improvement over 1280x1024. You should be pretty future proof, worst case scenario is that you buy another gtx 560 ti down the road for sli.

Thanks for the reply! It is the AR variant for the lifetime warranty, and I posted my edit too late for you to see it. I explained the HDD choices:

RAID on SSD, while very nice, is really not needed. It won't have any effect on games. I'd get one larger one and install all software and OS (except games).

500Gb on HDD won't last you long. Music, movies, games etc will soon swallow it up. Expect to need another 1Tb or so soon

CPU cooling. Overclocking you machine will get you more performance for the money. Smaller overclocks are really easy - esp. with help from here. You will need a better cooler than the stock cooler though. Either a NH-D14 or an H70. Better cooling from the d14 but quieter with the H70.

Don't forget speakers and, IMO, even a cheapish soundcard makes average speakers sound much better. Head over to the audio forum for better advice on that.

Nice build and welcome to OCN.

Ah, I forgot to mention my sound system. I have an Onkyo HT-S6100 that I'll be using with the optical out on the mobo. I was thinking about a soundcard, but the decent ones are $100. I could probably swing that, but I'd like to know it's worth it. I'll head over to audio and see what they think.

Thanks!

Two changes:
1. Get the MSI HAWK 560 or look into the MSI PE 6950
2. Pay the extra for the Dell u2211h or 2311h since it's an IPS panel, great ppi, and solid construction with swivel, tilt, rotate, and height adjustment.
Also look at the antec neo Eco 520 for single card setups or if you plan on expanding look at
Antec true new power 750, corsair hx/ax 750, seasonic x650/660/750 m12ii, XFX 750 (any), rosewill lightning, nzxt hale.

Costs too much for too little space.

SSDs aren't worth it IMO. I own two btw.
