Audio card needed?

Thread Starter
Hi everybody,

New to the forum (build thread over here) and I'm wondering if I'll need an audio card. I'm looking at the ASRock Z68 Extreme4, which has an ALC892 for audio.

I'll be hooking it up to my Onkyo HT-S6100, a decent HTIB - 1200W total, 7.1, pretty good quality for my ears. Now I'm not an audiophile per se, but I do like good quality audio, and I will not tolerate hissing or cracking (maybe I am an audiophile!).

If I decide to go with a dedicated audio card, I would have about $120 to put towards it, but I'd like it to be worth it. I'm open to the idea of waiting to see as well, and possibly buying it later. What do you guys think?

Thanks!

I would wait and see how well onboard does. for me, onboard has always worked pretty well for my speaker setup.

You'll prolly want to use the sound on your GTX560 and go HDMI to the reciever, that should give the best results without needing an expensive soundcard.

I was planning on running DVI to the monitor and optical to the receiver. I didn't realize video cards had integrated audio though.

Optical will be 5.1 compressed (DD or DTS). HDMI will do 7.1 uncompressed (TrueHD). If your going to make a digital connection it would be better on HDMI.

EDIT - Also if your using digital from the PC there's not much point to a soundcard, you'll be using the DAC's in the reciever.

Suh-weet! I didn't actually think about that before (I'm an ME, not EE!), but it makes sense. I'll let my purpose-built audio system handle the digital->analog business, cause that's all an audio card would do, right? The game itself is actually coming up with all the digital stuff?

Theres no such thing as true 7.1. Its 5.1 up mixed where the center channel and rear channel is split.
