OCN, You Win....Again

Just took a big swig of the OCN Kool-Aid

I thought that I could tweak my aging LGA 775 platform and justify only a graphics card boost, but I've been pushing the system a bit too far for today's games, and it shows. So, rather than spend countless hours tweaking and tuning (and in my case, cutting and soldering my thrashed mobo), I went ahead and just upgraded to a Sandy Bridge platform. The final nail in the coffin came when my southbridge heatsink would not allow my GTX 580 to seat properly.

Although my plan was to wait for Ivy Bridge, seeing how that won't be coming around until about this time next year, Helllllllo, Sandy!

I'm going to salvage what I can from my existing rig (PSU, HDDs, DVD drive and watercooling gear)

and replace it with:

i5-2500K
Asus P8P67 Pro Rev 3.0
G.Skill Ripjaws X (2x4GB) DDR3 1866Mhz
CPU-370 Waterblock

That will be paired up with my GTX 580, and I'll simply use my GTX 560 Ti as a PhysX card.

That was a joke. The card'll be on the marketplace soon.

This will also allow me to remove my northbridge waterblock, making my loop CPU only, and hopefully letting me hit 5Ghz on the 2500K.

Plans for the future are upgrading my aging Samsung 226BW 1680x1050 monitor into some 1080 or 1200p goodness and adding another 580 down the road when Kepler is released.

Interesting enough, Crysis:Warhead still manages to gobble 1GB of VRAM at the 1680x1050 resolution....very hungry!

Pics will follow

ETA: If you're interested, the best combo for me came with the Mobo+Ram. $240 for both when the board is normally $180 and the RAM is $115 ($295).
