Offsets and C1E are fun and preserve your CPU...

Found some cool stuff to do while helping stop degradation of your CPU.....

Use offsets and C1E so you can get idle vcore and downclocks to 1.1v and 1.6 ghz. Use proper LLC so you get something like 1.52v at medium load but full speed, and 1.5v at full load (for a cpu that needs 1.5v for 5 ghz); might be unavoidable if you have LLC that still has vdroop

No point enabling C3/C6 as this can cause crashes, due to vcore not being sufficient at light load or 1 thread, and it does nothing except park and turn off some idle cores, saving you maybe 10cents a month on electricity. Kinda silly when you're already only using 15W at idle.

Now for the fun stuff:
C1E is the exact same thing as EIST (speedstep) in they both reduce clocks and voltages at idle. C1E, however, is hardware based, BIOS+CPU controlled, and works regardless of the OS power plan. EIST is purely OS controlled and can be disabled by using a high performance power profile. But both can be turned on or off at will with Realtemp.

They also reduce clockspeeds and voltages when the cores are being limited (e.g., by the application), but will ramp up to full speed on a 1 thread program that runs at full speed. (experiment with this in COD Black Ops for those of you who have it...if you set a FPS cap, you'll notice the CPU will run slower the lower the FPS cap is, and if you remove the fps cap, you will run at full speed. VERY nice...but sorta bizarre to see your CPU running at 4.5 ghz because you set the FPS cap to 100...)

More fun stuff:
Rrealtemp 3.67 allows you to enable and disable C1E and EIST on the fly.
You suddenly want your CPU running at max speed (e.g., for screenshots?) Disable C1E in real temp.

Even MORE fun stuff:
Running a game that doesn't need your CPU to be running at 5 ghz and high volts, and want to preserve your CPU from any degradation while running that older game? Just click "disable turbo" in realtemp, and your CPU will run at 3.4 ghz at 1.2v (the serial VID; could be anywhere between 1.18 to 1.26v)+whatever your offset is. When you're done, just re-enable turbo...no need to reboot to lower your overclock (as long as you don't mind 3.4 ghz).

Definitely starting to really like offsets and C1E now...(now that I learned NOT to use the useless C3/C6...)

Yup, I love Offset. I haven't used fixed since I figured out how to use Offset. Good idea about disabling turbo haha.. I didn't think of that lol

I had to disable C3/C6 to stop weird BSOD's, though. When I read Earl'z post, I saw why...vcore not being raised up high enough on 1 core...C3/C6 puts idle cores into a deep sleep, and then they have to ramp up and retrieve data from L3 cache, and when I ran superPi with Cstates on, i noticed it took a long time (like 1 second) for the clock speed to properly ramp up, while it ramped up perfectly when I disabled them and ran the exact same test (even got a lower time as a result).

The game crossfire only runs on 1 core, but forces the CPU to 5 ghz, and I had a BSOD while just typing in the lobby. Most likely the vcore was too low with the C states, (I was getting some really weird vcore readings with C3/6 enabled, like 4.9 ghz and 1.404v, which i KNOW is unstable) so I disabled C3/C6 and it never happened again.

BTW I haven't tried clock modulation to reduce frequencies, yet with the offsets, although I did test modulation on a QX9650 at a barely 50 run linpack stable clock. Clock modulation DOES add stress to the CPU (For some weird reason), so you may wind up getting BSOD's at clock settings that should have been stable if the clocks were running there without modulation.

Um ok just tried clock modulation...not really that helpful...87.5% of 5 ghz gives you 4300 mhz and the vcore is still at 1.5v, 75% gives 3700 mhz with vcore at 1.34v....

I've been using the offset mode since I bought the cpu which was in Jan. I've been testing various methods, but the offset with regular LLC is the best, IMO. A little more difficult to achieve high OC, but I am fine with the 45 multi.

I agree on the C3/C6. I had to disable it because it caused the system to freeze.

I'll look more into this stuff this weekend when I start to OC the crap out of everything!!! biggrin.gif

Yeah you guys were right about offsets being useful. Now I can leave my PC at 5 ghz (as long as it remains stable at full load) without having to worry about it degrading by leaving it idle overnight....

BTW what's up with Rift? Getting 55 FPS with "past Ultra/custom" details (everything maxed beyond Ultra) on a 5 ghz CPU? I guess maxing everything really brings the CPU to its knees....

But the C1E based on CPU usage due to a FPS cap...that's something I've never seen before...but I guess that's a good thing too...who needs more CPU power if you're capped at 60 fps and only using like 40% of the cpu?

If someone wants to. Try using like -0.010 and 4.8GHz. Run prime and check your voltage.

What does it say?
I always substract FIRST before I try adding voltage. Found out that -0.020 works great for me.

0.9V at idle and 1.302-1.312 at full load at 4.8 w/ HT. smile.gif
Could someone else please try this??

I've had offsets and C1E enabled, but after reading this thread I disabled C3/C6 and my idle temps on 2 cores went up 6c. Re-enabled C3/C6, and they went back down. Of course, idle temps are so low that it prob doesn't matter, but I like seeing all my cores bottom out at 29c.

Thanks for sharing this info, I didnt even check the settings page on RealTemp.. Now I can easily compare 3.4Ghz vs 4.5Ghz.
