My Conroe build log - Page 13

The supposed "limitations" of SLi and Crossfire are marketing ploys, nothing more. Both technologies exist through the wonders of the PCI-Express interface and its ability to do peer-to-peer writes (one of the big deals about PCI-E some years back). The dongle and the SLi bridge only serve to carry the rendered image from one card to the "master" card where its combined and sent to the monitor. The major bandwidth for actually rendering the image goes through the PCI-E bus. They don't exist for no reason at all, higher end cards benefit from them because they already swamping the PCI-E bus with their data, so a dedicated pathway for rendered images reduces latency, but that shouln't be as much of an issue with dual X16 SLi/CF boards coming/out.

The Master card BS is my biggest guff with Crossfire. I'm looking at two eVGA 7900GTs for about $550 shipped to my door, already have an A8N32-SLi mothberboard. Thought about doing a Conroe/Crossfire build in a couple months and abut threw up blood when I saw Newegg wanted $450 for the CF X1900 Master Card, so it would cost me in all nearly $100 more do a simlar CF build, it's nonesense. As soon as ATi puts the "composting engine" on the chipset and eliminates the need for a master card, I won't even consider it.

I should probably move this post to the Rant section...

Agreed... that would be plenty of juice. And it would use way less power than the Crossfire system would, your 600W FSP might have problems running a X1900 CF setup.

Apparently I'm the only one who noticed DFI is using the famed chip set cooling mod used on the AMD SLI MBs, but have upped the fin size for even better performance?
