Essential games for a PC newcomer? - Page 6

All the games that released after 2002, you have too much to play.
If you looking for more modern games, here is my list:

Assassins Creed 2 (ultra-recommend)
Assassins Creed Brotherhood (after you finished AC2)
Team Fortress 2
GTA IV & The Ballad of Proud Tony (ultra-reccomended too, but i think the 360/PS3 versions are way better)
Test Drive Unlimited 2 (not a must have, just a nice game)
Duty Calls
Just Cause 2 (awesome game, but i think its more fun to play it with console)
Mafia 2
Dirt 2 (and maybe 3)
Call of Duty Blackops
Unreal Tournament 3 (old game, but sometimes nice to single-play it)

Just for graphics:
Crysis 2
F1 2010

Relatively new games i DONT recommend:
Homefront (fail)
Bulletstorm (telling you have thousands of ways to kill the enemy while even trailers do the same move over and over, also stupid story, dont waste your time.)

My personal PC gaming favourites

Total Annihilation ( supreme commander 1 is its spiritual sequel)
Total Annihilation Kingdoms
Dungeon Keeper 1 + 2
Black and White, First brilliant, second i still enjoyed but not soo much.
Warcraft III + expansion
Dawn of war Series pretty much all of them except soul-storm
Company of Heroes
Homeworld 1 + 2
Anything by Valve
The older command and conquer games
Total War games, these are simply amazing and the latest is the best so far.

Old game? Pong is an old game. UT3 could've been just as easily released yesterday and it would've been just as modern now.

Grab a good game pad, like a 360 controller if you are planning to get a bunch of multiplatform games that aren't fps or rts, or even rpg. Sometimes the keyboard and mouse is fine for those kinds of games (I played batman on kb/m just fine) but you would probably prefer a controller.

Games I recommend (disregarding ones you said you played or own :V):

Half Life 2 & episodes 1/2
Team Fortress 2
Portal 1/2
Left 4 Dead 2
Counter-Strike: Source (prepare for a steep learning curve for an fps haha)
Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Battlefield 2
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Crysis &Warhead
Oblivion (look for some good mods)
Fallout 3 (same as above)
Just Cause 2
Civilization 4 or 5
Psychonauts
Fable: The Lost Chapters
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Dragon Age: Origins (and maybe awakening, origins stands great on its own however)
Mass Effect 1&2
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Warcraft 3

If you aren't afraid of using STEAM, you can get many games on sale every now and then. Probably best to have hard copies mostly though, at least on the games you would be modding.
