Windows 7 registery question. (I think)

Ok so my house mate has just upgraded his machine and decided to use a 160Gb HDD for his OS and his 1Tb for files and the like, now the question is he used to use his 1Tb for everything OS, programs and files (un-partitioned) and has asked me if there is anyway that he can get his new install of windows 7 on the 160Gb HDD to reference the program installs he already has on his 1Tb (so he doesn't have to go through the job of reinstalling everything on to the 160Gb? Or is there a way of copying over the programs he has on his 1Tb to the 160Gb so that he can free up that space on the 1Tb?

I'm aware that this might not make much sense to people so if it doesn't please let me know and I'll try to explain it a bit clearer. smile.gif

Some programs like Steam can be moved over, but most programs must actually be reinstalled. If there is a way to do it via the Registry, then it would be significantly more work than just reinstalling them because you'd have to do everything that the installer does automatically.

If he's concerned about settings, then I recommend doing the same thing I once did: Google "how to back up insert program name here". Or he can boot to the 1 TB drive, open the programs, and then take screenshots of everything he wants to preserve in order to take away all the guesswork.

Don't get me wrong: I hate doing it too, but I predict that you will be surprised by what you find by using that Google search criteria.

Cheers for the information, I didn't think it was possible but thought I should ask just to make sure.

The operating system, & drivers, I could only say would stay intact. But I'm reading in my class that Windows System Image Manager could swap the install. I'm just getting to the part of the course where it shows me how to use it as of yesterday, & so I dunno if you would wanna use that program since it's normally for stripping down windows install images, & dealing with customization of the image that you'd burn to a disc. Or I guess you could use the Windows backup, & restore in the control panel.
