Pentium E5800 for Super Cheap Build - Page 2

8gb of ram is just too much for a simple gaming rig,but it's cheap so what the heck. The g41 motherboards don't overclock very well, but you may have some luck.I have used that board and it does have limited abilities. It's just that building a new rig with socket 775 is quite frowned upon around here. For maybe another 100 bucks you can have twice the cpu power, and much better overclocking abilities.

Yes I know, but this is not my rig, I told him he could get an AMD phenom II X6 1055T for $130 + a good AM3 mobo for $65. Which is exactly $100 more than the E8600 + mobo. I am tempted to just pay the extra $100 for him to ease my own pain in seeing this happen.

Would a Gigabyte GA-G41MT-S2P be any better for overclocking than the Asrock? It's $55 where I'm getting it.

Getting a S775 dualcore isn't worth it, rather get a AM3 board or something, with an X2 or X3, this way you can still upgrade for very cheap later on. This system will not not last long with the E5800. (coming from an E4300 User, and i've found that my system is getting too slow now, gonna upgrade in August, also playing BC2 and gonna play bf3 when it comes.)

I hear the Barracude 500GB 7200.12 is very similar in performance to the F3's, that and I'd really like to buy everything there at once. I don't think he needs the extra hard-drive space either, he already has a 2TB external.

I did not know ram above 800MHz doesn't matter on LGA775 mobo's, makes sense though being as it is "800" FSB.

Yep, all brand new, gotta love grand opening sales. The CX430's were $35, but sold out at canada computers
I would stick with the PSU you already picked. One less thing to upgrade when he decides to get better stuff. I have the same Hard drive and it works just fine. It's about as fast as the f3s, and since you can't really get f3s in Canada, is the best Price/Performance available.

Also, just keep in mind the 460 has a Mail in rebate of what appears to be 40, so it'll be a little more then 100 when you buy. Other then that, maybe a cheap cooler, since he'll need to overclock if he wants to render/game on it so make sure the board will allow that.

If he is gaming, show him some benchmarks so he can see that the x6 would be better for rendering gaming then that pentium.
