I haven't built/overclocked since there was no such thing as multiple cores, and i hope im not out of place posting this but, i am on a budget, cannot afford a 4 or 6 core cpu,.... and alot of what im reading i dont fully understand yet,.... so bottom line is, would it be easy enough for a newb to OC this into a quad core, would u recommend a 2core,... i play wow alot and need somethin to multi task with,.. so advise please.... i cant afford to "FRY" a new setup i buy either so what would u advise, i have purchased an ati raedon 5750 to go in the setup, gonna get 4 gigs ram when i make the order,....in fact this is the board/cpu im looking at, if someone could tell me if it can be unlocked fairly easy, id appreciate it.

Sorry if its total noob question, or posted in wrong place,... lack of funds prohibit me from buying what i really want.

Also friend of mine has a tri core setting on an asrock board which is am3, its already put together, 2 gigs ram which id upgrade to atleast 4..... price 200 which would be easier to contend with, just wanna set my disabled rearend in my deskchair and play my games.

I know that deal looks nice but if there is any way you can manage the extra $40 to get the extra 2 cores it will make a world of difference. Anyway overclocking should give you similar performance to 4 cores in a game as most games don't go above two or three anyway. However for multitaking you will take a hit, each core is able to work like an individual processor, while it's not exactly 2x the performance in multiple applications it is significant because 4 difference processors can run calculations in a single clock cycle as opposed to two. Also it is very hard to fry a processor if you OC right and watch your temps.

Anyway that Phenom is the same as my Phenom it just has 2 cores shut off and with good air cooling I was able to hit 4GHz 24/7, while you can't expect that you will have decent headroom to work with, as long as you have a good after market cooler you should be able to tack on .4-.6GHz.

Also if you're lucky you may be able to unlock that chip to 4 cores, the x2 and x4 phenom II black editions are all the exact same chip, the only difference is how they perform off the assembly line so if a core is dead they will shut it off and sell it as a x3 or x2 however if they aren't getting enough dead cores they will shut off 2 cores on a perfectly good x4.

With that motherboard, if you unlock it into a quadcore, you are likely to "fry" the system due to the VRMs.

I would rather have an 840 than a 555 Microcenter has 840's right now for $98.00. Sec I will look for a a cheap board and edit this post.

Cheap mobo

exactly what i have and i have to say its great and good stuff, i was expecting less from biostar but i have to say im amazed, i will surely buy again from them.

its great for budget build, tough i redid all heat connection to be sure the board doesnt heat too much. you might wanna do it too if you get one, just buy any good thermal paste and 1/8 washer(spacer, to tighten the heatsinks), remove preapplied glue, sand, apply tp and reinstall heatsink. it might not change much but it give me less stress to get a fried board.

hope it helped!
