This causes the top GPU to be about 15 degrees hotter than the bottom one. Now I can space them out, however I would have to utilize a 16 X and a 8X slot...Which would cause them both to run at 8x.

If I do this then it will be much better for temps, however what kind of performance hit will I take???

I lost 1fps at most by doing this.

Yeah...Could do that...but something gets me going about every now and then being able to annoy the wife and dog by making it sound like a Jet is taking off.....

I would opt for the 'spreading the cards apart at 16x/8x' option, personally. The difference in perf vs 16x/16x should truly be negligible. And like you say, it might be you could make up for it w/better OC ability ... although tbh I sorta doubt the 7-8C difference you'll end up with on the top card is going to amount to any significant extra OC ... but you can try smile.gif

I actually laid out like $300 for the board I have now (even though I already had a nice board) when I went with SLI Fermi's almost entirely because I wanted to have 16x/16x with a big gap between the cards ... not a lot of 1366 boards are laid out well for hot cards in SLI, and the ones that ARE ... they charge you a small fortune frown.gif

The ud3r won't let you space the cards like that, with only 2 x gpu installed they have to be in the 16x slots, with 1 in the 1st 16x & 1 in the third 8x windows will only see 1 card installed in the machine.
The third slot only likes to work for tri sli.

edit: maybe with a bios update or something, I haven't tried to do that on my ud3r for a while...

I have the same board and also have two 580 Lightnings. As much as I like the UD3R, I opted to finally bite on a X-Power to get both x16 and better spacing.

Putting it all together in a few weeks when I have some free time.
