I'm going to Korea and Hong Kong, I want to take as many pictures as I can of the cities, mountains, forest...etc. Most of all I would love to take shots at night in Hong Kong.

I want to get a shot like this.

Will the 14-24 be able to do this?

no a 14-24 wont be able to do that shot...to get that shot u need to shoot from "tsim sai tsui" and shoot across the harbor. so you actually need a fairly long lens, when i was in hk last year and i think i shot with a 24-70 at 70mm across the harbor. ill dig up some pictures later to see what i used.

If you want a good, reasonably wide lens, but are only on DX, get the

. With the 12-24 you will be getting an 18mm equivalent on a DX body, but the 17-55 is a DX lens. It's very sharp, and has more zoom range also.

Or, as someone else said, the Tokina 11-16 2.8 IS the best DX ultra wide.

I honestly have no idea why you would even consider getting a 14-24.

Yeah. Heck, even for FF you need to drop a lot to get it up to snuff. Since you're going to need to get the special Lee kit that allows use of filters and then you have to drop more on larger filters.

Just get the Tokina 11-16 2.8.

If you already ordered the 14-24, then save up for a D800

That Nikon 17-55mm looks like a good buy, I'll have to look into that. I've read about the D700's successor but does anyone know when it will be released?

What's the point, you already have a 18mm. Speed will be of no help in this situation since you're going to have to use a tripod and stop-down to get some nice depth. The D800/D700s/x/whatever won't be for a while since the situation Japan is in right now.

But what's the point? You've gone and bought almost all DX glass which won't be usable, albeit in DX mode, on a full frame. What features do you need that your D7000 doesn't offer?

I don't mean to come off as insulting but from what I've seen of your work you need to spend a little more time familiarizing yourself with framing, rule of thirds, and really making the subject pop. Spending $2000+ on a UWA or $2500+ on a D800 isn't going to improve your photography, at the end of the day it's the eye and ability of the photographer.

My suggestion? Get the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 (Review) for under $700 and just shoot. Forget about the gear. Maybe pick up a couple books on composition that are full of other photographers' work so that you can see what you like and try it.
