2GB DDR400 or 3GB DDR333?

Thread Starter
I want to make the best use of my current old rig, I already have 2x1GB DDR400 RAM memory but I managed to find another 2x512MB DDR400 modules. What I didnt know was that the memory controller can't handle having all slots used @400Mhz, so it went down to on 333Mhz. I'm running an Athlon 64 3800+ X2 s.939

I'd appreciate your opinion on this, which setup would give me a better performance, 3GB @333Mhz or 2GB @400Mhz? would more memory have a better effect in gaming, even if its on a lower clock speed? would casual work that dont require alot of RAM memory suffer much from the bandwidth loss in frequency?

Thank you in advance. smile.gif

Hi and welcome to OCN. Please fill in your system specs using the "add system" option in your profile- this helps us to help you! smile.gif

Now, what OS are you running on that old rig, and what do you plan to do on it?

Probably the 3GB variant is best, because the RAM will also have dropped the timings to compensate for the lower clock. So you get about the same performance, just with 1GB more smile.gif

I never noticed a difference between 333 and 400. Go with the 3gb. thumb.gif

More RAM brings more satisfaction to the OS than the small speed gain you would have with 400Mhz RAM .

333 and 400 should make little difference especially if timings considered. Since it all still runs dual channel in the correct slots, use 3GB.

thank you all for the advice, will it matter which set of RAM would come in first two slots? Right now i have A-DATA 512MB in slot#1 and slot#2 (2.5-3-3-8) and Kingston 1GB in slot #3 and slot#4 (3-3-3-8), dual channel preserved. I assume it won't matter, I only wanted a confirmation from someone who knows more about these things smile.gif

thanks again

Another vote for 3GB thumb.gif
Go with the bigger modules in slot 1 & 2
Put them in the slots with the same colours. i.e. 1GB sticks in blue slots, 512MB sticks in black slots (or whatever applicable colour). Be sure to read your mobo manual if you can find it, it might depend.
