Looking to do a NAS/ folding server - Page 2

Beast, I read your post on this thread. I can do the folder duplication using SyncToy with server 2k3. Use the onboard sata for the 2 sets of 2x 1.5tb hdd. When I do a clients backup on to the server, synctoy will duplicate the backup between the hdd sets automatically?

Is 380w good for 5 drives?

SyncToy isn't realtime - it needs to be run specifically before it will sync the folders.

I have mine set up with Windows Scheduler to run every other night to sync my drives up - but you could do every few hours, or weekly. Depends on how much data you change and how often, and how bad it would be if your primary drive failed between resyncs and you lost whatever hadn't yet been synced up.

My 380W PSU runs 12 hard drives, 2 optical drives, 2 hardware RAID cards and 2 dual port NICs (plus other bits). For 5 drives you're golden (unless it's either crap or you haven't mentioned that you're running a 6990 in there too...).

I would run it once a week then.

Nope no gpu. That actually bring up another question. How would I administer the sever over another computer on the network, with full admin rights in the sever? remote desktop type thing.

can I install the sever os with a flash? This way I dont need to get an cdd. Do I need to stream music or can I "map" the server and create a music folder on it.

I use either RDP (best) or LogMeIn (easier to set up over the 'net, and doesn't mess with GPU folding like RDP does). Either would work well, or there are other similar options (Teamviewer, various VNC options etc). Personally I think RDP is best unless you fold on a GPU in the system though as the quality is better than anything else I've used. Feels almost like sitting in front of a monitor that's directly connected.

Yes, I often install from USB as it's faster.

You can stream if you like, or share a folder if you like. Your server, your choices, your rules.

Nice. All sounds good. Ima pick up the seagate drives and I think I have my server. Big ups for all the help, I can get bogged in details.

better to get a little bogged in the details then to buy the wrong stuff and waste money and time on it.

Glad it helped.

Didnt want to start a whole new thread on the same build.

So hella noob question, on server 2k3 does it support internet explorer, when I need to download firmware?

Also I want to add an lcd screen later down the line for temps, drive info, network info. For the temps display the software needs speedfan. Would this all work under server 2k3?
I was looking at this display then using lcdsmartie software. Looks like a good lcd setup?

You're right, those are noob questions :-)

2k3 is basically XP with some extra software bundled and processesing power given more to "background processes" then to foreground ones (there's an option in XP under system settings...can't look it up right now..).

The point is if it works with XP there's 99.99999% chance it'll work fine on 2k3. The exceptions of course are when drivers or other software (anti-viruses in my experience) want you to buy a specific license for 2k3. But I guess I'm on a tangent.

To answer your question if those LCDs etc. work on XP chances are they'll work on 2k3. You could even use the XP driver.

That reminds me, what anti-virus should I use. So in gerneral if xp can do it 2k3 can do it.

At one point there was a special trick to get AVG to work on 2k3 (or WHS in my case). That several avg versions ago so maybe it doesn't work. And I probably shouldn't condone such license violating methods anyway.

To answer you question I'm pretty sure there's an anti-virus plugin for WHS but for regular 2k3 I think you're going to have to just buy a license for 2k3 specifically. Which is annoying I know. I think there's an open source anti-virus callled...ClamAV? that I think works on server without any arguments but I don't know if it's any good at actually detecting things. Just have to make sure you disable unwanted services and don't use administrator accounts as your regular login (use a limited one).
