9800GT > 4870x2 - Questions

My XFX 9800GT crapped on me. First OK gaming card for me. I did register it and I'm going through the RMA process (1st time). I've yet to send it in.

I have a Corsair gaming series 600GS power supply (48A @ 12V). I'm looking at getting a 4870x2 from a local for $125. I was looking at a 9800 GX2 but most local offers have been for $100-120 so it seemed like a good deal on the x2. My motherboard doesn't support SLI so that's why I'm looking at dual GPUs.

Do you think the PSU can handle or run it until I upgrade? The website says 650W but I know there are different grades of PSUs.

Thanks in advance. I did do some research

600w is enough for e6400 and one 4870x2.

I used to have an e8500 @ 4.0 and the same card. It didn't consume anywhere close to 600w.

I guess if you ran prime95 and furmark you might get to 550w with high voltages.

A GTX 470 would be a More Intellegent Purchase, for an Attractive $194.99 on newegg.com, Now if you budget is from 120-139 Then buy a Radeon HD 5850 Xtreme from sapphire, It'll do you better than a 4870x2, It comsumes less power, runs cooler, and is better and costs only $139.99 On Newegg.com

Now your Power Supply will handle the GPUs, but it is insufficient in the terms of Recommened power. But 600Watts is enough to run it.

i have same power supply and i have used 2 gtx 460 hawks and an i7 without any problem on it...so u will be fine with that psu.
u dont need to upgrade ur psu.

and i agree with the other guys
better look at hd5850/gtx 460 rather than ati hd 4870 x2.

No card can be purchased for $125 and hang with the x2. It is faster than a 5850.

I had an AMD quad @ 3.8ghz and a 4870X2 running perfectly fine on a Corsair HX520.

You should be perfectly although that E6400 will most definitely bottleneck that card but it should still be an awesome upgrade.

Thank you both for the quick replies! I checked newegg but don't see the card listed for the price. A local has a sapphire 5850 (don't know if it is extreme) for $150 new in packaging. Only one 5850 in stock @ newegg for ~240 shipped. Hmm...

Yeah i read comments about the bottleneck. The T240HD monitor I have runs 1900x1200 so I figured that might be a problem. What kind of speeds do I need to hit to prevent the bottleneck? I heard 3.xGhz would even be a bottleneck.

I don't know what difference the Extreme does..
